Primary prospective teachers related to application example on a realistic mathematics education

This study was carried out to be an example of an application for mathematical modeling on classroom teacher candidates. This research is a case study. The research was carried out with 45 teacher candidates who were studying in the 3rd grade of cukurova University 2019-2020 academic year and who took the mathematics education course. Prior to the study, a preliminary interview form was applied to determine the readiness of the class teacher candidates for model and mathematical modeling. Afterwards, for two weeks, teacher candidates were trained in mathematical modeling by the researcher. After the training, three heating problems and three application activities were applied to the class teacher candidates in order to form the basis for mathematical modeling. In the last stage of the application, the final interview form was applied to the teacher candidates in order to determine the final opinions of the teacher candidates for mathematical modeling. The data obtained from the preliminary and final interview forms were analyzed with the descriptive analysis technique. The heating problems of teacher candidates and mathematical modeling performances in application activities were determined using the "scoring key for measuring mathematical modeling performance". Teacher candidates' scores for mathematical modeling were determined by two encoders. The harmony between the encoders was analyzed with kappa statistical technique. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that there was a significant harmony between the encoders. As a result of the research, it was observed that the opinions of teacher candidates for mathematical modeling changed positively, but their proficiency in mathematical modeling was poor.
