Comparision of street styles at Nişantaşi and Beşiktaş with cultural studies perspective

This thesis examines the identity representations exhibited through clothing in the streets of the big city and examines how people experience street styles in their daily life. To understand the street culture and street styles of Istanbul, which is the cultural and production center of Turkey and a global metropolis; the street styles of Nişantaşı, which is considered to be the fashion center of İstanbul and Beşiktaş, known for the proximity to subcultural fashion styles are being compared. This thesis consists of three main chapters including bibliography. In the first part, the determination of the problem, the aim of the study, the research of the methodology and the structuring of the sections are mentioned. In the second part, the concept of fashion is being analyzed by examining by looking at its evoluation from modernism to postmodernism, classical and contemporary sociological studies. The concept of street style, its relations with the urban city are examined by looking at the fashion capitals of the world and the represantations in the media. In the third part, which is the field research, Istanbul street styles' representations in the global media, the cultural charactersitics of Nişantaşı and Beşiktaş, the identities and self-presentations in daily life are being examined. This section examines and compares the streets styles of Nişantaşı and Beşiktaş according to fashion theories. In the final section, findings and interpretations are provided.
