Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Spina bifida is one of the most common congenital malformations in our country and in the world. Despite the developing diagnostic and therapeutic methods, ocular findings in spina bifida patients are quite common today. We aimed to investigate the spina bifida with or without hydrocephalus relation to ocular findings. Materials and Methods: We included 37 patients who were previously referred to Istanbul Eye University Department of Ophthalmology and who had computed tomography scans. Previous ophthalmologic findings and Evans ratio (EO), which measures indirectly grade of hydrocephalus, measured on recent CT images of these patients were investigated reprospectively. From the eye examination findings; Refractive errors, strabismus and optic disc findings were used for the study. Patients were divided into three groups according to the Evans ratio (EO ≤0.3, 0.3-0.5, ≥0.5) and compared ocular findings of these groups. In addition, patients divided into 3 groups according to their age (age ≤1, 1-3, ≥3), the rates of evans and refraction defects were compared. Results: It was determined that the eye findings of the patients did not change according to the rate of evans and there was no relation between age and evans ratio. However, refraction errors was seen more frequently as patient age increased. Discussion : According to our study results, it was thought that the degree of hydrocephalus did not affect the ocular findings in patients with spina bifida. But the emmetropization could be deteriorated in spina bifida.
