Space and memory interaction in urban renovation applications of historical environments: The case of the historical city center of Konya

Historical environments are important urban space elements that provide the connection between the past and the future with the meaning and memories they contain. Absolute economic growth targets brought by globalization; By focusing on the rent and land speculation of original values in both the socio-cultural and socio-spatial environment with the self-centered, individualistic approaches of the society, it also rapidly consumes the memory of the historical environment. The plan, design and project principles for the preservation of historical memory in historical environment urban renewal studies are determined by the space and memory interactions of the society; It is a necessity arising from planning and social responsibility that it is based on identity, belonging, attachment to place, perception, meaning, time, place and cultural elements. Space and memory relations begin with the perception of the environment in which individuals live. Individuals who perceive the environment they live in attach meaning to the space in their minds with their experiences. With the meaning of the space, individuals' sense of attachment to the place and belonging to the place are formed. These experiences in the urban space have an important place in the formation of the identities of the cities. The change of historical place memory, which will be examined in the sample of Konya Historical city center, with renovation projects; It consists of the Kapi Mosque District I, which is the gate of the covered bazaar, the new Mevlâna Bazaar, the IInd Zone, the Buğday Bazaar III, located to the south of the Bedesten Bazaar, and the Mengüç Street IV Zone in the Akçeşme District, adjacent to the Üçler Cemetery. All of these Regions are affected by the renovation works in the historical Konya City Center, which is the reason why we were chosen as the study area; The interaction of space and memory has been dealt with relatively, as it has been declared as a renovation area by the municipality and partially rehabilitated, renovated and redeveloped, and new spaces are produced. In order to illuminate the urban renewal and space-memory interaction issues related to the study area; A literature review was made on the historical documents of the city of Konya with the historical city analysis technique; urban renewal activities carried out in the selected study area, within the scope of the components of the concepts of space and memory, with the help of the aerial images reflecting the old period zoning plans, the zoning plans in force and the photographs of the old-new Konya city Bedesten-Mevlana bazaar-Mengüç regions, with the help of visual and morphological analysis evaluation technique. The findings of spatial memory interaction were compared with the content analysis technique with the oral interview study conducted with the expert city planners, architects and mapping engineers. In the conclusion part of the thesis, the effects of the urban renewal projects in the Historical Bedesten Bazaar, Mevlâna Bazaar, Buğday Bazaar and Mengüç Street and its surroundings on the urban identity of Konya within the framework of the concepts of identity, belonging and attachment to the place are evaluated in the context of space and memory interaction.
