New approaches to Qur'āni̇c parables in the sample of Tafsīr al-Manār

In this study we aim at examining the comments by Mohammad Abduh and Mohammad Rashīd Ridā about the Qur'ānic parables on the basis of their work entitled Tafsīr al-Qor'ān al-Haqīm, known generally as Tafsīr al-Manār in tafsīr literature, and find out the new and authentic ones of their comments. In the first section of our study, composed of third sections, we give information about life and works of the writers, and general characteristics of Tafsīr al-Manār. In the second section we make mention of the parables and their matters and concepts, and some approaches to the the Qur'ānic parables in Islamic world in the modern period. In the third section we examine how Mohammad Abduh and Mohammad Rashīd Ridā understood and interpreted the parables. Also in this section we suggest that the authers considered some Qor'ānic verses about the parables in the symbolic, metaphorical, and rational ways while interpreting them, thereby we conclude that they used a kind of apologic speech and style in their approaches pecular to the classical Islamic modernism Keywords: Tafsīr al-Manār, the Qor'ānic parables, contemporary period, Muhammad Abduh, M.
