Evaluation of temporal processing in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

The aim of this study; to evaluate the temporal processing skills of individuals with type 2 DM. The study included 45 individuals with Type 2 DM (study group), 55 normal (control group), a total of 100 individuals, between the ages of 22-55, with a pure tone hearing threshold within the normal range. Detailed anamnesis of the individuals in both groups was taken, otological examination was performed, auditory symptoms were questioned, questions about the auditory processing disorder created by us were asked, pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and immitansmetric evaluation were performed. SPT (Time Pattern Test), FPT (Frequency Pattern Test) and GIN (Gaps In Noise) tests were applied monaural to evaluate the temporal processing performance of individuals. Individuals with Type 2 DM performed statistically significantly worse than individuals in the control group in all SPT, FPT and GIN tests (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in SPT, FPT and GIN test performance between the right and left ears for both groups. There was no significant difference in SPT, FPT and GIN test performance between male and female subjects for both groups (p>0.05). As a result, it was found that Type 2 DM had negative consequences on temporal processing.
