The effect of body weight loss on serum sirtuin 1 concentrations of individuals with type 2 diabetes

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between short-term body weight loss and serum sirtuin 1 protein concentrations in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance admitted to the endocrine outpatient clinic. The study was conducted with 11 individuals between the ages of 20-64, who applied to the Baskent University Ankara Hospital Endocrinology Polyclinic between March and June 2022 for control purposes, were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance previously or newly. Sociodemographic characteristics and general information of individuals were evaluated with a special survey form created for the study. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples were taken from the participants; biochemical parameters were evaluated. Body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, water percentage, visceral fat degree and metabolic age measurements were taken with a Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer (Tanita BC 601 Basic). Through the questions in the survey form and face-to-face nutrition counseling with each participant after the doctor's examination, anamnesis was taken from the participants and information based on the statement about their general eating habits was obtained. Anthropometric characteristics of individuals evaluated according to gender; biochemical findings were evaluated according to the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance. The mean age of the individuals participating in the study was determined as 54.5 ± 6.86 years. 63.6% (n=7) of the participants were women and 36.4% (n=4) were men. 54.5% (n=6) of the participants had type 2 diabetes and 45.5% (n=5) of them had insulin resistance diagnosis. The mean of HbA1c was found to be statistically significantly higher in individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than in individuals diagnosed with insulin resistance (t=-2.855; p<0.05). Also, it was determined that there was a statistically significant negative correlation (s=-0.820; p<0.01) between individuals' LDL Cholesterol values and initial sirtuin 1 level. When the comparison of anthropometric measurement baseline and end-of-study values according to the genders of the participants was examined, no statistically significant difference was found for both genders (p>0.05). When the baseline and end-of-study BMI grouping and anthropometric measurement differences according to the gender of the participants were examined, it was seen that there was a negative weight change in the female gender group, while there was a positive weight change in the male gender group. When the relationships examined regarding serum sirtuin 1 findings were evaluated, no significant difference was found between genders and type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance diagnoses regarding baseline and end-of-study data (p>0.05).
