Tomris Uyar as a story writer

This thesis investigates the written work of Tomris Uyar who has attracted much attention with her contributions to Turkish Literature, especially as a story writer. In addition, the definition of the short story is discussed from various aspects. History of Turkish short story writing is analyzed along with world literature with an emphasis on 1950s? Turkey.Tomris Uyar had published eleven story books mainly consisting of short stories. Only one of her stories was a long story among a hundred and four stories. Although she had given much importance to content, in her late art, she had focused on style for the sake of avoiding self repetition.She had analyzed the inner world of the individuals, their loneliness, alienation from the society, and dilemmas. Especially conflicts of women were emphasized. While the individual being the primary focus, the social problems were also underlined in the background.In her stories, about the common life of middle class, women were given the leading role. Men were encountered less frequently and kids existed mainly with their emotional side. Individuals were described both physically and psychologically however women and kids were most successfully represented from the psychological perspective.Typical points of view are the first person and the third person omniscient in Tomris Uyar?s stories. She usually interchanged between both points of views in order to enhance the content. She sometimes kept her distance in relation to the events of the story, while failing to stay objective in some stories.Locations of the stories were mainly Istanbul and its changing surrounding. Rarely some Anatolian villages were also mentioned. Some islands or abroad were used as the symbols of escape. Location was used to reflect the inner world of the individual and the story was developed such that the individual was identified with the location.She presented fragments from life, and utilized short periods of time following the rules of the short story. She developed her stories at achronic time while referring back to the past to present flashbacks of the individuals. One of her story telling techniques was stream of consciousness which provided streaming the present time and the past time synchronously.Tomris Uyar used a plain collegial language with short and striking statements. She had a strong style combining figures of speech, portrayal and humour.She is one of the most important writers of 1950s Turkey and she has influenced many forthcoming artists. This thesis presents Tomris Uayr?s career in Turkish Short Story Writing and Turkish Literature.
