Examining the concept of fıtrat (Disposition) in the context of gender

The content of the concepts and the meaning they refer to are directly related to the culture and beliefs of the geography in which they were born. The concepts used by the Qur'an have been particularly influential on Islamic thought. This thesis is about the examination of normalized gender roles and stereotypes through the concept of fıtrat (disposition). In this context, how gender is shaped on the axis of a religious concept is discussed. In our study, in order to understand the concept of fıtrat (disposition), classical books and current researches written in the fields of commentary, hadith and kalam were carefully reviewed to identify and discuss common or different approaches. Linguistic and semantic analyses were used to examine the concept on the theoretical reading level; the books of early Arabic linguists were used in the analyses of the concept. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to filling the gap in this field since there is no study that critically examines the concept of fıtrat (disposition) in the context of gender. It is also aimed to contribute to a better evaluation of the problems in this axis through the analysis of the meanings attributed to the concept of fıtrat (disposition) and the gender roles and stereotypes assigned to women and men through the concept of fıtrat (disposition).
