Transformation process of cities in Turkey and Tarlabaşı example

Urban area and settlements are the entire spatial systems having change and transformation enforcedly because of lots of factors in the course of time. When cities realize their improvements within the frame of its original architecture in historical process, urban renovation becomes unavoidable because of becoming old, immigration and natural disasters which are the common problems of the world cities. Parts of the city have been started to be transformed within the scope of regulations and several city plans since Tanzimat Reform, and has been continued until today. In recent years Marmara and Van earthquakes reveal the necessity and urgency clearly in respect to urban transformation. Urban transformation implementations on project basis, show differences before and after industrial revolution, otherwise we can observe renovation, revitalization, regeneration, gentrification, preservation and rehabilitation. Several strategies of the urban transformation can be implemented simultaneously because of project area, historical and cultural texture, infrastructure and physical deficiencies, regional economic efficiency need. Accordingly, a lot of strategies have been implemented in Tarlabaşı Urban Transformation project area. Tarlabaşı region has been transformed into settlement area and has been reconstruction from 1800s to the present time. The ultimate urban renovation project has come under criticism. Historical and cultural texture is not handed down the next generations and hirer and host are forced migration. The project does not solve the physical problems of the region. Social problems of the region and urbanite have transferred to the other regions and it does not realize the sustainable criteria.
