Abstract (EN)
Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical and laboratory outcomes of the patients treated due to tuboovarian abscess (TOA) and to investigate the treatment procedures and after treatment complications. Methods: The retrospective analysis included 136 patients who were treated at Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Yıldırım Beyazıt University Medical School due to tuboovarian abscess between 2005 and 2016. Demographic characteristics, risk factors, clinical and laboratory outcomes, treatment procedures, and after treatment complications were recorded. P values < 0.05 was considered as the level statistical significance when evaluating the results. Results: The ages of the patients ranged between 18 - 65 years and the mean age was 40.7 ± 8.6 years. The prevalence of intrauterine device (IUD) use was 39 %. Mean value of body temperature was 37,2 °C; mean leukocyte count was 14694 /uL; mean sedimentation rate was 80,1 mm/ hour; mean high C-reactive protein 101,5 and mean CA125 was 30.5. All of the patients underwent surgical treatment in addition to medical treatment. Twenty six (19.2%) of the patients underwent laparoscopic and 110 (80.8%) patients underwent surgery by laparotomy. Mean duration of surgeries was 85 minutes. Conclusion: Tuboovarian abscess (TOA) remains a serious disease with high rates of morbidity and mortality and thus the ideal treatment modality should be determined based on the age and clinical condition of the patient, and desire for pregnancy. Since TOA leads to high morbidity and decreased fertility rates, a rapid diagnosis of TOA, a prompt initiation of the treatment, and switching to surgical treatment in patients not responding to medical treatment is of prime importance.
