The impact of tourism sector on economic growth: The case of Turkey

In this dissertation, the impacts of tourism on Turkish economy in have been examined from the first quarter of 2003 till the third quarter of 2017. In the first section of the study; the definition, the importance and the significance of tourism sector in economies have been explained. Moreover the historical development of tourism sector, its negative and positive economic impacts in different countries and the expectations relating to the future of tourism sector in the world have been given. In the second section; some basic global and local indicators of tourism sector have been expressed. In the third section; some empiricial analysis have been conducted. In this context, a brief of literature review, method and model descriptions, and the evaluations of the analysis results have been explained. The aim of the study is to detect the validity of impacts tourism sector on Turkish economy in relevant years. The analysis has been carried out by using some econometric methods regarding structural breaks. It has been investigated that some cointegrated relationships are valid at 5% and 10% significance levels. Also, unidirectional causality links have been handled that are from GDP through tourism expenditures and from exchange rate through tourism expenditures.
