Abstract (EN)

Apologising is a frequently used speech act verb in human relations in the context of compensating for a transgression, violation or a mistake. It has an important role in pragmatics studies as it has socially healing and harmonizing functions. Thanks to corpora, analyzing speech acts in context has become available. From this point of view, this study aims to analyze apologizing in Turkish with the speech act verbs of apologizing or verbal expressions such as özür dile-' -to apologize', bağışla- 'to forgive', affet- 'to forgive', pardon 'pardon me', kusura bakma 'excuse me', üzgünüm 'I'm sorry' This study utilizes data from Turkish National Corpus (TNC) and Spoken Turkish Corpus (STC). The similarities and differences of apologizing strategies compiled by Aijmer (1996) are tested. The different examples that are not prototypically reflect apologizing are grouped under Halliday's (1984) metafunctions of ideational, interpersonal and textual. In conclusion, it has been observed that construing the self in context of speaker-hearer is essential for scaling the apologizing strategies in terms of politeness theory. The non-protoypical apologizing exampels reflects one's effort to establish a harmonious relationship with others and to feel connected with the group
