Migration and security relationship in Turkey: The case of Syrian migration

The Arab Spring, which affected the Middle East and Arab countries between 2010 and 2011, reached Syria as a result of the actions that started in Dera in 2011. The Arab Spring process in Syria was more violent compared to other Arab countries, and these actions that started in Dera affected the whole country. Civilian people were affected the most by these actions, which turned into a civil war, and as a result, an intense wave of immigration from Syria started. Turkey is one of the countries most affected by this migration movement. As of 2020, nearly five million registered and unregistered Syrian refugees reside in Turkey. One of the biggest problems created by the intense migration wave is the security problem. In our country, where economic and political tensions are already experienced, the difficulties created by integrating the Syrian refugees, whose number has reached approximately five million, further escalate the tension. In addition, with this migration wave, the terrorist threat against Turkey's southern border has started to increase. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of the mass migration wave from Syria to Turkey with both Turkey's internal security and border security. In the study, the concepts of migration and security are explained in detail in order to better understand the subject, and the effect of migration on Turkey's security in Syria is examined. In addition, within the scope of the relationship between migration and security, it has been tried to explain how the integration process of Syrian immigrants who fled the Syrian civil war to our country and started to live together with the local people should be solved, and how the integration process of the immigrants who took refuge in Turkey should be solved in the social, cultural, economic, political and security areas. effects and potential safety issues are also discussed.
