Second language education at primary level in Turkey

Today it is hard to catch the speed of tecnological progresses and information accumulation, it is widely respected that the first step to achieve this aim is to teach a second language.For this second language education in our country starts from primary level.In our country second language education has to face with lots of missings and impossibilities. The results of our second language education which starts at the primary level and continues till the end of univesity education stays below the wanted level. This research aims to find out the factors which affects the second language education, to discuss the education problems and to produce possible solutions by going back to the history of second language education in Turkey and examining the stages passed. To get information used in the research and to solve the problem situation, the factors which affect the second language education have been researched by scanning field work, because of using this method, the research is a descriptive study. At the end of the research it is found out that the most important factors which affect the second language education are mother tongue, choice of method, teacher, director, education enviroment,student?s age and attitude, teaching material, appliance of new technologies, test and appraisal. It is a must to handle the second language education programmes according to today?s new methods and education technics. Moreover while determining the education methods and materials, school enviroment in Turkish education system must be considered and the needs of the moment are tried to be covered. In addition to this it is determined that with in-servive trainings teachers must be encouraged to use the new technologies and methods Key words: Primary education, language, second language, language education
