Abstract (EN)

The Tanzimat Reform Period is one of the most important turning points in terms of Ottoman-Turkish modernism. The period, which started with the edict that Mustafa Reşit Pasha read in Gülhane Park on 3 November 1839, deeply affected the social life in the Ottoman Empire. The fact that this process of change started to create breaches in the traditional Ottoman understanding of life led to the reaction of the Young Ottomans. These intellectuals, who regarded westernization as a break from roots, emphasized that traditional values should be preserved. Islamism, the foundations of which were actually laid during this period, became more evident in II. It was with the Meşrutiyet Press. The Islamist intellectuals, who defend the need to advance by preserving the traditional structure in the face of westernist ideas, also voiced their suggestions for social, cultural and political fields. Although the profound change and transformation experienced after the proclamation of the Republic caused a greater reaction of the Islamist intellectuals, they were suppressed during the one-party period. After the transition to the multi-party political regime, especially Necip Fazıl's Büyük Doğu Magazine was effective in shaping the mentality of the Islamists and forming their perception of history. Like their predecessors, Islamist journals, which were also published in the atmosphere of pressure created by the military regime in the 1980s, made their struggles with the Republican era reforms through the anti-Westernization they had started since the Tanzimat process. The historical perception of Turkish Islamism, which has expressed its views within the framework of Islamist media organs after the 1980s, has actually been shaped by the judiciary and knowledge experienced from the westernization adventure in the Ottoman Empire to the present day, in addition to the construction of an identity. With this study we have done, we will examine the approach of the Islamist movement to the problem of westernization.
