Turkish–based Islamic–referenced right and advocacy-oriented non-governmental organisations' institutional policies on third generation rights

When the third-generation rights were introduced to represent the collective aspect and solidarity identity of human rights in the late 1970s, it had an overarching aspect of all existing human rights principles. The complementarity relationship in-between generational rights and the civil, collective and solidarity aspect of this relationship have made it inevitable to set a holistic approach of human right. In this vein, this thesis aims to contributes to human rights sociology, while investigating the institutional policies of Islamic-oriented rights and advocacy-based non-governmental organizations' activities in the field of human rights in general and third generation rights in particular. It focuses on four mainstream Islamic-oriented rights and advocacy-based non-governmental organization's institutional policies on right to the environment, the right to development and development, the right to benefit from humanitarian aid, the right to peace and the right to self-determination which all known as third generation rights. The thesis has conducted a semi-structure interview with 20 workers from four different NGOs and asked 40 various questions. In analysing and interpreting results, Maxqda technique was used as a qualitative data analysis program. Based on findings, the thesis uncovered that Turkish Islamic-oriented rights and advocacy-based non-governmental organizations maintain very significant human rights activities. It is also found that selected NGOs have capacity to set a norm for human rights organizations on a universal scale in considering their institutional capacity characters such as organizational network, human resources, financial power, organizational ability, areas of activity and projects, social reputation, visibility and accessibility, academic and intellectual accumulation, spiritual priorities and principles of existence. In addition to being one of the rare applied research encompassing a field work on Islamic-oriented rights and advocacy-based non-governmental organizations, the thesis offers a unique data set and make an original contribution to the relevant literature. Likewise, it provides an academic comparison between non-governmental organizations which have different reference lines and have a human rights agenda as a corporate identity, and faith-based non-governmental organizations that carry out human rights activities on a universal scale.
