In the study carriedout in three works written in Turkish spoken in Turkey, it has been determined that themost common used demonstrative is `bu?, the frequency of use of `şu? and `şunlar? arethe least common used demonstratives. It has also been determined that the demonstratives not only have the merelyreferantial function, but also they have functions such as, modifying and despising.Further more, in the prepositional phares formed with the demonstratives, there is anobvious idiomatic use.As a result of the study, it has been determined that the basic referancefunctions of the demonstratives in the written language are anafor for thedemonstratives ` bu, bunlar, o, onlar?, as well as being catafor for the demonstrative `şu?and `şunlar?.Key words: pronoun, demonstrative pronoun, referance typing word
