Using international migration as a policy tool: A study of Germany, France, Sweden

This study was conducted in order to explore how international migration, a humanitarian phenomenon, is used as a policy tool. In this context, the study examines the countries of Germany, France and Sweden, which have received intense fluxes of migration and are among the Member States of the European Union that have different sociocultural, historical and political backgrounds, within the framework of the components of the securitization theory put forward by the Copenhagen school. The methodology implemented in the study consists of literature review and comparative review to examine the discourses of political actors with a view of securitization in the relevant countries, as reflected in the international press. As a result of the discourses examined in the research, it was determined that the political actors in the countries in question securitized the issue of migration, using it into a policy tool in order to influence the domestic politics.
