The relationship between social anxiety disorder and psychological symptoms in university students

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between social anxiety disorder and psychological symptoms in university students. At the same time, it is aimed to reveal the relationship between the dependent variables of the research and the socio-demographic variables. The research is of relational type and the survey method was used to collect the relevant data. Research data were obtained from a total of 300 university students, 150 women and 150 men. While the "Socio-Demographic Information Form" developed by the researcher was used to collect the data, the "Libowitz Social Anxiety Scale" was used to determine the social anxiety levels of the participants and the "SCL-90-R (Psychological Symptom Screening) Test" was used to determine the psychological symptom status of the participants. Statistics program for social sciences was used in the analysis and analysis of the obtained data (SPSS). While internal consistency analysis was used to determine whether the scales in the study gave reliable results, skewness and kurtosis values were examined to determine whether the scales had a normal distribution. Correlation and regression analysis findings were used to determine the predictive levels of research variables. According to the findings of the study, a low, medium and high strength linear relationship was found between social anxiety disorder and SCL-90 general and sub-dimensions (somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, depression, anxiety, anger, etc.). As a result, it was found that SCL-90 general and sub-dimension scores increased as social anxiety disorder increased in university student participants. It is recommended to give awareness training under the name of general awareness about the concepts of social anxiety disorder and psychological symptoms in university students.
