The city of Nis passed into the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1386 during the reign of Murat I. After that, Turkish families from Anatolia started to settle in the city and its surroundings. In the city, Muslims generally engaged in blacksmithing, shoemaking, weaving, saddle making and leather upholstery. In this context, the occupations, production and lifestyles and economic lives of the Muslim and non-Muslim population living in the central districts, neighborhoods and farms in Nis will be discussed.
