The effect of Duolingo application on language skills in foreign language teaching

The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of using Duolingo, a popular language learning platform, in teaching foreign languages for 10th grade students. The study focuses on four basic language skills that are crucial for language proficiency; focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing. In the study, semi-experimental model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, and pre-test post-test control group design were applied. To measure the effectiveness of these skills with the Duolingo language learning app, the study was conducted using the School Classroom feature of the Duolingo web tool. The class branch was registered, and those who participated in at least 10 hours of study through Duolingo determined the sample of the research. The study's data collection tool was used as both a pretest and a post-test of the tests involving four skills approved by the University of Cambridge. Students in the same branch who could not participate in the studies at home formed the control group. Thanks to the Duolingo school feature, the experimental group worked on four skills without ads and fees, improving listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language. In the control group, no change was observed. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of using Duolingo outside the classroom. The findings suggest that Duolingo, a digital language learning tool, can be used to support its integration into language teaching outside school, making language learning more accessible and engaging for students. Furthermore, this study can contribute to a broader discussion about the role of technology in education and the benefits it can bring to the classroom.
