Abstract (EN)

Idioms are among the important cultural elements and values that make up the vocabulary of Turkish. It has been observed that foreign students have difficulty in learning the idioms in Turkish, which is one of the richest languages in the world in terms of stereotypes, but it has not been emphasized how the idioms should be presented to the students. Considering that language teaching is also culture teaching, teaching idioms is important in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In this study, it is to determine whether C1 level students who learn Turkish as a foreign language learn idioms with their emergence stories or only literally. The action research pattern of qualitative research was used as a method. For this purpose, 30 C1 level students; 15 statements, 15 of which are experimental and 15 of which are control groups, and 20 idioms chosen by experts were applied to experimental group students with their emergence stories and the control group with dictionary meanings. Pretest and posttest were applied after the application to find out if the students knew the 20 idioms chosen. Data obtained from the resulting results; It was evaluated in terms of variables such as gender and country and presented in a table. The data obtained as a result of the study were compared with previous studies. It was observed that the gender factor did not show a significant difference in learning, and the pre-test and post-test changes of the students are shown in the table. As a result, it has been seen that teaching idioms with their stories is more effective than teaching them only with their meaning. Key Words: Teaching Turkish to foreigners, idiom, story, culture
