The effect of reflective keeping dairies by 7th grade students? in science and technology course, environment and human unit, on students? achievements and attitudes

The study has been prepared to investigate the effect of reflective teaching method on primary 7th grade students? environmental attitudes and achievements in the education of Environment and Human Unit in Science and Technology course. This study was performed with the two different classes of 7th grade students which were selected with an appropriate sampling method in Gümüşova primary school in Düzce province. The study groups, involve totally 54 students; an experimental group with 27 and a control group with 27 students.After each lesson, students in experimental group were asked to keep reflective science diaries. In each lesson 3 questions were asked to encourage the students make researche at home, show unclear points in their minds and evaluate the subject and then researche answers were recorded on diaries by students. To determine the effect of keeping diaries on students attitutes and achievents, Environment Attitude Test; Environment and Human Unit Achievement Test and Environment Pre- Knowledge Test developed by the reseacher, have been used as a way of collecting data.Data are collected by utilizing a pre-test post-test control grouped quasi-experimental design. Reflective teaching method has been used for experimental group, traditional learning method has been used for control group. Acquired data has been analysed with SPSS 11.5. According to the results, the keeping reflective science diary in the teaching of environment and human unit, in science and technology course has effected the student?s achievements and attitudes towards environment positively. From the point of teacher, examination of students? diaries are usefull to reorganise the lesson.
