A diagram proposal that can be used for housing design in accordance with sustainability principles

In today's world, environmental problems arise with the rapid depletion of natural resources. The construction sector also plays an important role in the formation of these environmental problems. Buildings pose an environmental problem throughout the life cycle, from the source of the materials to the useful life of the building. Green building certification systems have been developed since 1990 to benefit the construction industry on an international scale, both to reduce environmental problems and to contribute to the sustainability of buildings. Green building certification systems are rating systems that aim to create a measurable reference in building's conserving resources capability and revealing their negative impact on the environment. In this study, widely used green building certification system developed in the world and in Turkey have been identified and their evaluation criteria and certification levels are determined. In this study, also a green design guide for apartment buildings that will built in hot-dry climate of Turkey have been developed taking into account the evaluation criteria of green building certification systems. Firstly, sustainable design criteria were determined for green design guide for apartment buildings that will built in hot-dry climate of Turkey. In this context, the evaluation criteria of the green building certification systems examined within the scope of the study were analyzed and all the criteria related to design of buildings were studied and reclassified. According to this classification, the sustainable design criteria of the developed guide have been collected under six main headings: 1) Land Planning 2) Water Using 3) Energy Using 4) Material Using 5) Waste Evaluation 6) Indoor Environmental Quality These main headings include all specific criteria that must be taken into account in the design of apartment buildings that will built in hot-dry climate of Turkey and the information and suggestions that are expected to be guide for the designers.
