Abstract (EN)

This research aims to serve the increase of the education quality by being a source to guide the manager choice process by determining the personality traits of the managers which develop their leadership skills. In this research it is targeted to test whether the leadership skills and personality traits of the managers of primary and secondary schools vary with respect to their gender, age, duty, educational status, the duration of management, marital status and the number of schools worked as a manager during their career statistically significantly or not and to determine a significant relationship between the leadership skills and personality traits of the primary and secondary schools' managers exists or not. The descriptive research method is used. The universe of this research is formed by 179 managers who work at Primary and Secondary Schools affliated to Ministry of National Education in Beykoz, İstanbul during 2013-2014 Academic Year. The scales are executed to 161 teachers among the universe by random sampling.In order to determine the leadership behaviours of the managers, the scale which was developed by Hemphill and Coones in 1979 is used. The scale consists of 30 subjects and two subdimensions known as Initiation of Structure and Consideration. To define the Personality Traits of the managers ACL-Adjective Checklist developed by Harrison Gough and Alfred Heilbrun and adapted to Turkish by Prof. Canan Savran is used. The ACL- Adjective Checklist includes 300 adjectives and 24 subdimensions which are Achievement, Dominance, Endurance, Order, Intraception, Nurturance, Affliation, Heterosexuality, Exhibition, Autonomy, Aggression, Change, Succorance, Abasement, Deference, Counselling, Readiness, Self-Control, Self-Confidence, Personal Adjustment, Ideal self, Creative Personality Scale, Military Leadership Scale, Masculine Attributes Scale, Feminine Attributes Scale. Using SPSS 15.0 software package frequency and the percentage values of the demographic features are analyzed, arithmetic averages and standart deviations are calculated. The Independence Group T –test is used to test the variety of the scores of the Leadership Behaviours and Personality Traits with respect to the gender of the managers, the Kruskal Wallis-H Test analysis is used to determine the variety of the scores of the Leadership Behaviours and Personality Traits with respect to age, duty, educational status, the duration of management and the number of schools, Mann Whitney-U test is used to determine among which groups a significant variety exists, Mann Whitney-U test is used to test the significant variety with respect to marital status. The correlation among the total scores, the relationship between the total score of the Leadership Behaviours Scale and Personality Traits Scale subdimension scores are analyzed by Pearson Product Moment analysis.According to outcome research, it is found out that in leadership behaviours and Initiation of Structure behaviour with respect to gender, Intraception, Nurturance, Exhibition, Autonomy, Succorance, Abasement, Deference, Counselling Readiness, Creative Personality, Masculine and Feminine Attributes scales vary significantly; with respect to age, Military Personality Scale, with respect to duty, Endurance, Self-Control, Personal Adjustment and Military Leadership Scales; with respect to duration of management career, Succorance, Deference and Self-Control Scales; with respect to marital status, Self-Control Scale and with respect to the number of schools worked at, Endurance and Self-Control scales vary significantly. A positive significant correlation is observed between the Leadership Behaviours and Intraception, Nurturance, Ideal Self and Feminine Attributes Scales, between Agression and Counselling Readiness a negative correlation; between Initiation of Structure Leadership Behaviour and Achievement, Endurance, Self Confidence, Ideal Self, Creative Personality and Masculine Atrributes Scales a positive correlation; between Consideration Leadership Behaviour and Intraception, Nurturance, Heterosexuality and Feminine Attributes Scales a positive correlation;between Aggression and Counselling Readiness a negative correlation are observed.
