A 3D video quality evaluation model that provides high depth perception satisfaction and efficient transmission channel use based on depth cues

In the field of Computer Vision, where scientific research and academic studies are accelerating, the popularity of applications based on the use of 3 Dimensional (3D) videos is increasing day by day. There are many variables that determine the quality of 3D videos such as indoor-outdoor differences and environmental factors. In this context, it is essential to develop new methods for quality evaluation of 3D videos to be used in modern applications to provide high depth satisfaction and efficient transmission channel use. In this thesis, a dynamic, adaptive, and No Reference (NR), which does not require any reference video, 3D video quality assessment model is proposed that aims to increase depth perception satisfaction in viewers by taking into account the Human Visual System (HVS) characteristics. The proposed model is based on measurement methods derived from the color images and/or the depth maps that make up the 3D videos. In this study, where utmost importance was given to the use of deep learning-based approaches, Pix2Pix model was used for the Aerial Perspective (AP) measurement method, RAFT model was used for the Motion Information (MI) measurement method, and YOLOv8 model was used for the Retinal Image Size (RIS) and Convergence (CONV) measurement methods. Although all methods are performed on color videos, depth maps are also included in the calculations in RIS and CONV methods. As a result of the studies conducted, all outputs of the proposed methods were obtained to fulfil the expected results and the thesis work was successfully completed.

Test description generation from software requirements and performance analysis: Application of advanced NLP models

Software testing is of critical importance in the software development life cycle. It is a process that verifies whether software provides the specified functionality, performance, and quality. Software testing enables early detection of errors, providing opportunities to intervene at a stage when their correction is more feasible, thus preventing unnecessary interruptions in the development process. In addition, well tested software reduces extended support and maintenance costs for the customer, and long-term use result in lower maintenance costs and legal risks. In other words, software testing increases the quality of software while reduces costs. However, performing tests alone is not enough for an effective testing process; it requires quality test descriptions that detail the tests. Test descriptions standardize testing processes, record possible test scenarios, and present expected test results. Writing a test description is a time-consuming process that requires expertise and is open to human error. Therefore, it has become a necessary for test descriptions to be automatically generated independently of the person, quickly, and accurately. In this thesis, it is aimed to produce test descriptions from software requirements in a faster and higher quality manner using NLP models, which are among the pre-trained models in the literature that have been fine-tuned with the prepared datasets. As a result of the studies and analyses, it has been observed that it is possible to create a test description from software requirements faster and higher-quality.

DDoS attack detection using machine learning and deep learning methods

Generating illustrations for children books using generative adversarial networks

This thesis presents a very first method to create children illustration book images. Our method takes edge maps or sketches as input and generates images and/or videos stylized by the selected illustrator. To achieve this, we developed three novel models; an image colorization, an image stylization and a video translation model. Our proposed sketch to image translation model integrates an adversarial segmentation loss to baseline methods which improves the FID and mIoU scores greatly. We show that although the current state-of-the-art image-to-image translation models successfully transfer either the style or the content, they fail to transfer both at the same time. We propose a new generator network to address this issue and show that the resulting network strikes a better balance between style and content. Current video-to-video translation methods build on an image-to-image translation model, and integrate additional networks such as optical flow, or temporal predictors to capture temporal relations. These additional networks complicate and slow down the model training and inference. We propose a new method for ensuring temporal coherency in video-to-video style transfer. We propose a new generator network with feature warping layers to overcome the limitations of the previous methods. Even though, current state-of-the-art image stylization models could generate highly artistic images, quantitative evaluation of them is still an open problem. We propose a new evaluation framework which considers both content and style transfer aspect of an image stylization model. To train these three models, we collected a unique illustration dataset. Our dataset contains more than 10,000 illustrations from 26 different illustrators. It also contains object level bounding box annotations. In its current form it is the first large scale illustration image dataset. We conduct in depth analysis to show that the dataset is challenging.

A sample verification and validation framework for open source simulation software

Verification and Validation (V&V) activities performed in the life cycle of a software project are necessary to meet technical specifications and requirements. Likewise, V&V activities in a simulation project's life cycle have a critical role in ensuring the validity of the relevant model. Accordingly, these activities must be carried out successfully in order to determine the consistency of the simulation model that is being developed with its real or hypothetical system. To achieve this, it is expected that the most suitable V&V methods are to be evaluated, selected and then applied within the scope of the simulation project. Until recently, various V&V methods have been produced and made available for using at certain stages of the software cycle. Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply so many methods at the same time, considering such project constraints as time and resources. Therefore, in the field of Modeling and Simulation, selection and application of V&V methods in a proper and efficient way for the project in question poses a big problem. In the present study, upon reviewing the existing literature on the subject, the missing aspects crucial for the selection of the suitable V&V techniques were examined first. Afterwards, a sample framework that can guide the selection of the most appropriate methods for the V&V processes of simulations has been offered. The current study made use of score-based method selection processes rather than the traditional method selection techniques, by taking requirements and metrics of the relevant simulation project into account. The proposed framework was applied using open source simulation software project data. And the practical results show that the framework developed in this study significantly optimizes the V&V method selection process compared to general-purpose method selection techniques.

Developing a Turkish sentiment lexicon using tone distributions

With the developing technology and increasing use of the internet, many sources of data have been exposed to researchers. Analysis and extraction of meaningful information from this data is a research topic under the field of natural language processing. Sentiment analysis which is a sub-field of NLP evaluates the content of data with respect to the opinion it conveys as one of positive or negative. Most sentiment analysis research is done using one of two approaches: lexicon based and machine learning based. Lexicon based approach needs a dictionary of positive and negative words which is then used to evaluate a text. Although there are abundance of studies in English, the same can not be claimed for Turkish. Therefore, in our study, we focus on constructing a comprehensive and accurate Turkish sentiment lexicon. In this paper, we aim to develop a Turkish sentiment lexicon with a novel methodology: using statistical tone density functions computed using a very large document corpus obtained from mainstream Turkish news agencies. In this way, for the first time in the literature, a Turkish sentiment lexicon is created by using this method. The lexicon not only assigns tone values instead of boolean polarities, but also provides sharper tones which is usually not possible with other approaches in the literature. We evaluate the performance of this lexicon in comparison with similar lexicons in the literature. Results show that the constructed sentiment lexicon in this study achieves a comparable performance and poses many potential improvement possibilities. Keywords: Sentiment analysis, Natural Language Processing, lexicon, polarity, statistical distribution

A plagiarism detection system based on POS tag N-grams

It is a common problem to find similar parts in two different documents or texts. Especially, a text suspected of plagiarism is likely to have similar characteristics with the source text. Plagiarism is defined as taking some or all of the writings of other people and showing them as their own, or expressing the ideas of others in different ways without citing the source. Today, it is observed that there is an increase in plagiarism cases with the development of technology. Therefore, in order to prevent plagiarism, various plagiarism detection programs have been used in universities and principles regarding plagiarism and scientific ethics have been added to education regulations. In this thesis, a novel method for detecting external plagiarism is proposed. Both syntactic and semantic similarity features were used to identify the plagiarized parts of the text. Part-of-speech (POS) tags are used to identify the plagiarized sections of suspicious texts and the original sections corresponding to these sections in the source texts. Each source sentence is indexed by a search engine according to its POS tag n-grams to access possible plagiarism candidate sentences rapidly. Suspicious sentences that converted to their POS tag n-grams are used as query to access source sentences. The search engine results returned from the queries enable to detect plagiarized parts of the suspicious document. The semantic relationship between two given words is calculated with Word2Vec, which is a method for using word embeddings. On the other hand, the longest common subsequence (LCS) algorithm is applied to calculate semantic similarity at the sentence level. In this thesis, PAN-PC-11 dataset, which was created to evaluate automated plagiarism detection algorithms, is used. The tests are carried out with different parameters and threshold values to evaluate the diversity of the results. According to the experimental results with this dataset, the proposed method achieved the best performance in low and high obfuscation plagiarism cases compared to the plagiarism detection systems in the 3rd International Plagiarism Detection Competition (PAN11).

Monocular depth estimation with self-supervised representation learning

Many representation and modalities are developed for better scene understanding as images, videos, point clouds, etc. In this thesis, we intentionally characterize scene representation as depth maps in order to leverage rich 3D information and to develop strong priors over the scene. Gathering ground truth for depth estimation task is burdensome. To alleviate this supervision, novel view synthesis is employed as a proxy task to solve the depth estimation task within the Structure-from-motion (SfM) framework. Besides, self-supervised representation learning for depth estimation is not studied extensively, and the current state of self-supervised representation learning signals that there will be no dependence on ground truth annotations for training at all. Combining two paradigms is a way of improving representations for better scene understanding that leads to better practical developments. Specifically, we propose {\em TripleDNet (Disentangled Distilled Depth Network)}, a multi-objective, distillation-based framework for purely self-supervised depth estimation. Structure-from-motion-based depth prediction models utilize self-supervision while processing consecutive frames in a monocular depth estimation manner. Static world and illumination constancy assumptions do not hold and allow wrong signals to the training procedure, leading to poor performance. Masking out those parts hurts the integrity of the image structure. In order to compensate side effects of previous approaches, we add further objectives to SfM based estimation to constrain the solution space and to allow feature space disentanglement within an efficient and simple architecture. In addition, we propose a knowledge distillation objective that benefits depth estimation in terms of scene context and structure. Surprisingly, we also found out that self-supervised image representation learning frameworks for model initialization outperforms supervised counterparts. Experimental results show that proposed models trained purely in a self-supervised fashion outperform state-of-the-art models on the KITTI and Make3D datasets compared to models utilizing ground truth segmentation maps and feature metric loss compared to supervised counterparts. Experimental result shows that models trained without any ground truth knowledge, or with any prior based on ground truth, outperform models on the KITTI and Make3D datasets on many metrics.

The relationship of cybersickness with eye and brain activity in response to varying speed, scene complexity and stereoscopic VR cues

In this study, our aim is to make an evaluation of the interplay between environment-based cues, namely speed, scene complexity and stereoscopic rendering parameters, and the discomfort felt in the form of cybersickness due to VR experience with head-mounted-displays. This study provides a broad and combined analysis of these cues in a fully controlled VE. The effects were investigated using the EEG and Eye tracking data as well as the self-reported discomfort measures collected from the participants. The statistical analysis reveals connections between cybersickness and the collected biometric markers. It also reveals the biometric response differs with the type of stimulus causing the cybersickness, implying detection of the cause is possible by examining biometric data.

Action quality assessment with multivariate time series

Action quality assessment using computerized methods is considered to be a promising direction in objective evaluation of actions in several domains including health, sport and education. In a typical architecture for quality assessment, a classification or regression system is asked to assign a query action to a predefined category or a continuous label that determines its quality level. Such systems are still trained manually, and they may have inconsistent annotations. Hence, an attempt to categorize or quantify the quality level can be biased due to potentially scarce or skewed training data. In this thesis, we approach the quality assessment problem as a pairwise ranking task where we relatively assess two input actions to identify better performance instead of assessing their absolute levels. To this end, we propose a novel computational model that takes two action data in the form of multi-variate time-series acquired from motion sensors and reports the probability of a query sample having a better quality than a reference one. The ranking model is built upon an attention-enhanced Siamese Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Network fed by piecewise aggregate approximation of time-series data. A probabilistic ranking layer is proposed to make the final relative assessment. The pairwise model is further extended to create an empirical feature representation in a regression setup. The model is adopted in three different applications, namely, gait assessment in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients using foot sensors, surgery skill assessment using kinematics sensors and diving quality assessment using estimated pose from video recordings. According to experimental results, the proposed model achieves higher assessment accuracy than the existing models for pairwise ranking in all common datasets. The new regression model with new ranking-based empirical feature representation also outperforms the existing models when applied in their experimental setup. The proposed model is further shown to be accurate in individual progress monitoring. The model that is developed in this thesis can be considered as a generic model for several pairwise ranking tasks provided that the inputs are in the form of multi-variate time-series signals. While LSTM layer makes the model applicable for all sequential signals, attention enhancement extends its ability to adopt novel signals obtained from different measurement modalities. Proposed rank layer with probabilistic loss function allows the Siamese model to handle relative comparison of inputs instead of their direct evaluation for similarity. This relative assessment approach may overcome the limitations of having consistent annotations to define quality levels and provide a more interpretable means for objective skill assessment. Moreover, the model allows monitoring the skill development of individuals by comparing two activities at different time points. We expect that this model will find a wide range of applications in several domains, but more particularly in sports and healthcare.

Neural semanti̇c parsing, annotation and evaluation for Turkish

Semantic representation is a way of expressing the meaning of a text that can be processed by a machine to serve a particular natural language processing (NLP) task. Universal Conceptual Cognitive Annotation (UCCA) is one such semantic representation form that is both cognitively and linguistically inspired. UCCA represents the meaning of a text with a directed acyclic graph (DAG) whose nodes can be either terminal or non-terminal nodes, where terminal nodes correspond to tokens and multi-tokens in the text, non-terminal nodes comprise several tokens that are jointly viewed as a single entity according to some semantic or cognitive consideration, and edges indicate the role of a child in a relation. In this thesis, there are three research paths within UCCA representation especially for Turkish language: semantic parsing, data annotation, and evaluation of UCCA representation as extrinsic evaluation in other NLP problems. In the first part of the thesis, we present supervised deep learning-based parsing models, which are transition and graph-based approaches, to better analyze the approaches for UCCA representation. We also present an unsupervised deep learning model that leverages pre-trained language models (PLM) as an external knowledge source. In the second part of the thesis, we present a Turkish UCCA-annotated dataset, that is built using the proposed graph-based semantic parser in a semi-automatic pipeline. Finally, we investigate using UCCA for other NLP tasks including Semantic Textual Similarity (STS), text classification, and question answering (QA) as extrinsic evaluation of UCCA representation. It is therefore reasonable to ask whether we can improve the performance of NLP tasks by using semantic information in the form of UCCA representation. In conclusion, the results show that semantic information in the form of UCCA representation improves performance in NLP tasks, especially in tasks that require more semantic information, such as QA.

Flight maneuver classification using artificial neural networks

There are globally known basic flight maneuvers performed by fighter and aerobatics pilots with agile aircraft. These basic flight maneuvers have strict rules that the pilots should follow to complete the maneuver and can be used to evaluate the pilot's or aircraft's capabilities. Flight data is classified into flight maneuvers by aviation professionals before evaluation. The need for this classification created a research area to be filled: Automatic flight maneuver classification. This study proposes a solution to the automatic flight maneuver classification problem by exploiting artificial neural networks. It also contributes a flight maneuver classification dataset to the literature. This dataset was generated using professional flight simulation tools. The flight data attributes were evaluated and selected to give the optimum performance in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall. The types of artificial neural networks used and compared were single hidden layer neural networks, deep neural networks, and recurrent neural networks. Combinations of these types, activation functions, optimization methods, and gradient descent algorithms were tested against the problem to maximize the performance of the solution. There are no secondary studies on the subject of flight maneuver classification and this study also fills this gap by contributing a systematic literature review on "flight maneuver classification using machine learning imethods". The solution proposed by this study successfully classified ten distinct flight maneuvers such as basic descent and ascent, but also more complex ones such as Immelman, split-s, and lazy-eight. The results were evaluated by calculating accuracy, precision, recall, and loss parameters on test data. The best-performing artificial neural network type, which is deep neural networks, gave over 96 percent accuracy and less than 0.1 loss in the test set. All the artificial neural network types and solutions gave over 90 percent accuracy with correctly chosen attributes. This study also contributed a software program that classifies the flight maneuver in real-time while the flight maneuver is being performed in a simulation. It was seen that this software was also accurately predicting the pilots' intended maneuvers in real-time.

An end-to-end convolutional neural network framework for low-resolution attribute recognition

In video surveillance, visual person attributes such as gender, backpack, and type of clothing are crucial for searching and re-identification. For detecting and retrieving these attributes with high accuracy, the availability of high-quality videos is a necessity in general. The details in an image are described by image resolution; the higher the resolution, the more image details. However, in real-world video surveillance systems, videos are usually captured from a far distance, resulting in low-resolution person regions. The technique used for solving this obstacle is super-resolution, which constructs high-resolution images from several observed Low-Resolution images or one single Low-Resolution image. This thesis examines this problem and proposes an end-to-end Convolutional Neural Network that combines a Super Resolution network and Multi-Attribute detection network for more effective Multi-Attribute detection. Our framework consists of joint training of two main parts, the Super-Resolution and attributes learning. We use different Super-Resolution algorithms in the first part of the proposed method. For this purpose, some well-known and high-quality Super-Resolution algorithms were tested, and finally, two methods entitled EDSR and DBPN were selected. We evaluate the proposed method on two benchmark datasets, Market-1051 and DukeMTMC-reID, labeled with some important labels (attributes) and predict every image label. Experimental results on these two benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the Low-Resolution multiple attribute learning task. Furthermore, we also propose a higher-level linear combination scheme of the two network types (with and without super-resolution), yielding superior results in person attribute recognition.

Model robustness in data-scarce regimes and the effect of frequency perturbations

The last decade has witnessed the meteoric rise of data-driven methods, which has been elevated to new heights thanks to the availability of powerful hardware and abundant data. Despite their swift ascension, deep learning methods are repeatedly shown to have robustness problems; they can be tricked into making errors with minor changes in the input that are invisible to us humans, or they can not withstand certain failure modes common in real-life scenarios. This thesis focuses on the robust generalization problem, where two primary aims drive our research effort. First, inspired from the surprising lack of thorough discussions on robust generalization in data-scarce regimes, we perform an exhaustive analyses on the robustness behaviour of models trained in zero-shot learning settings. We first show that discriminative zero-shot models have distinct robustness characteristics against adversaries, such as unseen and seen classes being affected disproportionately, the effect of original model accuracy and the stark differences between how zero-shot and generalized zero-shot accuracies degrade. We also identify the unique pseudo-robustness effect caused by adversaries, where models might be falsely declared as robust. We then extend our analyses to a more practical scenario, where images are corrupted with common image corruptions. We curate and present the first three datasets for corruption robustness analyses in the zero-shot literature. Using these datasets, we provide a set of rigorous analyses with a wider range of zero-shot models to assess their robustness against corruptions. Our results show that with key augmentation choices, we can improve the performance profiles of various models. Finally, we aggregate the results of adversarial and corruption robustness behaviours of zero-shot models and conclude with a thorough comparison. Second, inspired by the fundamental techniques in image processing, we focus on using frequency-spectra information to improve model robustness. Assuming that the true label information of an image resides in its low-frequency components, we propose HybridAugment where images are augmented by randomly swapping their high-frequency component with other images. This augmentation is implemented in tandem with existing augmentations, and enforces the network to be less reliant on high-frequency information, which is a prime reason for model robustness issues. We then propose two variants of HybridAugment, where single or multiple image settings are used to perform the augmentation. With single and multi image augmentations being used at the same time, the results are further improved. Finally, inspired by the two orthogonal frequency-centric analyses (i.e. frequency bands and phase/amplitude decomposition) and the need to unify them, we propose HybridAugment++ that performs a hierarchical augmentation in the frequency-spectra. In addition to swapping low and high-frequency components of images, HybridAugment++ also swaps phase and amplitude of random images, but does so only on the low-frequency components. HybridAugment++, with its single and paired variants working in tandem, achieves state-of-the-art results in multiple benchmark datasets, showing its effectiveness.

Enhancement of dark images and videos via set-based learning

Capturing images under extremely low-light conditions poses significant challenges for the standard camera pipeline. Images become too dark and too noisy, which makes traditional enhancement techniques almost impossible to apply. Recently, learning-based approaches have shown very promising results for this task since they have substantially more expressive capabilities to allow for improved quality. Motivated by these studies, in this thesis, we aim to leverage burst photography to boost the performance and obtain much sharper and more accurate RGB images from extremely dark raw images. The backbone of our proposed framework is a novel coarse-to-fine network architecture that generates high-quality outputs progressively. The coarse network predicts a low-resolution, denoised raw image, which is then fed to the fine network to recover fine-scale details and realistic textures. To further reduce the noise level and improve the color accuracy, we extend this network to a permutation invariant structure so that it takes a burst of low-light images as input and merges information from multiple images at the feature-level. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach leads to perceptually more pleasing results than the state-of-the-art methods by producing more detailed and considerably higher quality images.

Learning visually-grounded representationsusing cross-lingual multimodal pre-training

In recent years, pre-training approaches in the field of NLP have emerged with the increase in the number of data and developments in computational power. Although these approaches initially included only pre-training a single language, cross-lingual and multimodal approaches were proposed which employs multiple languages and modalities. While cross-lingual pre-training focuses on representing multiple languages, Multimodal pre-training integrates Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision areas and fuse visual and textual information and represent it in the same embedding space. In this work, we combine cross-lingual and multimodal pre-training approaches to learn visually-grounded word embeddings. Our work is based on cross-lingual pre-training model XLM which has shown success on various downstream tasks such as machine translation and cross-lingual classification. In this thesis, we proposed a new pre-training objective called Visual Translation Language Modeling (vTLM) which combines visual content and natural language to learn visually-grounded word embeddings. For this purpose, we extended the large-scale image captioning dataset Conceptual Captions to another language—German using state-of-the art translation system to create a cross-lingual multimodal dataset which is required in pretraining. We finetuned our pre-trained model on Machine Translation (MT) and Multimodal Machine Translation (MMT) tasks using Multi30k dataset. We obtained state-of-the-results on Multi30k test2016 set for both MT and MTT tasks. We also demonstrated attention weights of the model to analyze how it operates over the visual content.

Selective personalization using topical user profile to improve search results

Personalization is a technique used in Web search engines to improve the effectiveness of information retrieval systems. In the field of personalized web search has recently been doing a lot of research and applications. In this research, we evaluate the effect of personalization for queries with different characteristics. With this analysis, the question of whether personalization should be applied for all queries in the same way or not is investigated. While personalizing some queries yields significant improvements on user experience by providing a ranking inline with the user preferences, it fails to improve or even degrades the effectiveness for less ambiguous queries. A potential for personalization metric can improve search engines by selectively applying a personalization. Current methods for estimating the potential for personalization such as click entropy and topic entropy are based on the clicked document for query or query history. They have limitations like unavailability of the prior clicked data for new and unseen queries or queries without history. In this thesis, the topic entropy measure is improved by integrating the user distribution to the metric, robust to the sparsity problem. This metric estimates the potential for personalization using a topical user profile created on user documents. In this way, we can overcome the cold start problem to estimate the potential for new queries and increase the accuracy of estimates for queries with history. Although in this thesis the main focus is on topic-based user profiles, since there is not more research on keyphrase-based user profiles in the process of personalization, we do a comparison research between keyphrase-based and topic-based profiles. We examine how personalization can be integrated into the state of the art keyphrase extraction models by considering different models of supervised and unsupervised methods. We evaluate topicbased and keyphrase-based user profiles using a re-ranking algorithm to complete the process of personalization using different datasets. In personalization using keyphrase-based profiles, personalized models based on supervised keyphrase extraction approaches obtained more accuracy by 7% than unsupervised approaches however it does not improve compared to topic-based models. In topic-based models, we use a combination of personalization in the level of user-specified and group profiling as part of the ranking process. In the previous ranking methods, more improvement in ranking is for the queries which match the user's history. To take advantage of ranking for all queries, we present a group personalized topical model(GPTM) that uses groups obtained from clustered similar users on topical profiles. Experiments reveal that the proposed potential prediction method correlates with human query ambiguity judgments and group profiles based ranking method improve the Mean Reciprocal Rank by 8%.

Türkçe his analizinde optimizasyon ve ön-eğitimli modellerin kullanımı

His analizi sayısal içerikte yer alan hislerin otomatik olarak belirlenmesi işlemidir. Bu tez kapsamında, makine öğrenmesi yöntemleriyle yüksek performanslı Türkçe his analizi yapmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla belirsizliği arttıran dengesiz sınıf dağılımı ve veri azlığı problemlerine çözümler önerilerek his analizinin performansı arttırılmaktadır. Çalışmada dengesiz dağılım gösteren veri kümelerinde yer alan tüm sınıfların başarısını ölçmek için sınıf içi performanslar kullanılmaktadır. Belirsizliği azaltmak amacıyla geliştirilen optimum his vektörleri yöntemiyle derin öğrenme karar mekanizmasına getirilen yenilik sayesinde elde edilen genel doğruluk performansları korunurken, sınıf içi his analizi performansları arttırılmıştır. Ayrıca Türkçe için ilk kez, ön-eğitimli dil modelleri his analizine adapte edilerek, çok miktarda etiketli veri ihtiyacı olmayan ön-eğitimli his modeli geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen yöntemden elde edilen sonuçlar farklı veri kümeleri ve öğrenme yöntemleriyle karşılaştırmalı olarak sunulmaktadır. Ön-eğitimli his modeliyle Türkçe his veri kümeleri üzerinde gerçekleştirilen deneyler sonucunda alandaki en yüksek performans elde edilmiştir.

Eeg-based assessment of cybersickness in a vr environment and adjusting stereoscopic parameters according to level of sickness to present a comfortable vision

Virtual reality (VR) is an increasingly widespread technology that provides a more realistic and fully immersive experience by using head-mounted displays (HMDs). However, this medium comes with some side effects. Users immersed in a virtual environment (VE) experience motion sickness like discomfort, which is named visually induced motion sickness(VIMS) or, more commonly, cybersickness. In an effort to overcome cybersickness experienced with stereoscopic displays, we propose a novel real-time system to detect cybersickness from the incoming electroencephalogram (EEG) feedback and to mitigate it by updating the cue parameters as per the feedback from the proposed model. The VE used in the study was generated procedurally by tuning levels of 3 different types of cues (navigation speed, scene complexity, and stereoscopic rendering parameters) to induce cybersickness in a varying range of severity. In the first phase of the study, we trained a two-stage shallow convolutional neural network with the EEG data collected from the users while immersed in the VE. The proposed two-stage model was utilized to detect cybersickness and to classify factors causing cybersickness, respectively. The performance of the cybersickness detection model reached an overall accuracy of 76.26%, while the factor type classification model achieved 81.01% overall accuracy. To assess the performance of the proposed cybersickness detection and mitigation system, an experiment consisting of two control sessions, and one models-in-the-loop session (MIL) was conducted in the second phase of the study with a different user sample. The differences in the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) responses collected before and after each session, and the time-dependent changes in the cue parameters showed that the participants felt less cybersickness during the MIL session in which the proposed cybersickness detection and mitigation system (CDMS) was utilized.

A time-based intuitive path planning on large-scale crowd simulation models

Traditional management models of intersections, such as no-light intersections or signalized intersection, are not the most effective way of passing the intersections if the vehicles are intelligent. To this end, Dresner and Stone proposed a new intersection control model called Autonomous Intersection Management (AIM). In the AIM simulation, examining the problem from a multi-agent perspective, demonstrating that intelligent intersection control can be made more efficient than existing control mechanisms. In this study, autonomous intersection management has investigated. We extend their works and added a potential-based lane organization layer. In order to distribute vehicles evenly to each lane, this layer triggers vehicles to analyze near lanes and they change their lane if other lanes have advantage. We can observe this behavior in real life such as drivers change their lane by considering their intuitions. Basic intuition on selecting correct lane for traffic is selecting less crowded lane in order to reduce delay. We model that behavior without any change in AIM workflow. Experiment results shows us that intersection performance is directly connected with the vehicle distribution in lanes of roads of intersections We see the advantage of handling lane management with a potential approach in performance metrics such as average delay of intersection and average travel time. Therefore, lane management and intersection management are problems that needs to be handled together. This study shows us that, the lane through which vehicles enter the intersection is an effective parameter for intersection management. Our study draws attention to this parameter and suggested a solution for it. We observed that the regulation of AIM inputs, which are vehicles in lanes, was as effective as contributing to aim intersection management. PLO-AIM model outperform AIM in evaluation metrics such as average delay of intersection and average travel time for reasonable traffic rates which is in between 600 vehicle/hour per lane to 1300 vehicle/hour per lane. Proposed model reduced the average travel time reduced in between %0.2 - %17.3 and reduced average delay of intersection in between %1.6 - %17.1 for 4-lane and 6-lane scenarios.

Developing a tool that converts a process model into a BPMN data model by mining from multiple perspectives

Process mining is mainly focused on process discovery, and also replay techniques to check conformance and analyze bottlenecks. It is further applied to mine the other process perspectives, such as time, data, and resources, by replaying the events in event logs over the initial process model. When process mining is extended far beyond discovering the control-flow models; roles, bottlenecks, amounts of time passed, guards, and routing probabilities in the process can be identified. Such extensions are considered under the topic of multi-perspective process mining, which makes the discovered process model more understandable. In this study, a framework for applying multi-perspective process mining and creating a BPMN process model as the output is introduced. The framework, which uses a recently developed API for storing the BPMN Data Model in blockchain in a secure and immutable way, has been developed as a plugin to the ProM tool. In doing so, it integrates a number of techniques for multi-perspective process mining in literature, for the perspectives of control-flow, data, and resource; and represents a holistic process model by combining the outputs of these in the BPMN Data Model. In this thesis, we explain technical details of the framework and also demonstrate its usage over a case in medical domain.

Congestion-aware adaptive routing algorithm design for 3D Network-on-Chip

New communication methods have become inevitable due to the continuous increase in the number of components on the integrated circuits. Designers, who prioritize performance, scalability, power consumption need better solutions. Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture emerged as a solution to these requirements with its parallelism and scalability. As the technology advances in integrated circuit systems, cores can process more data and require better communication. As the number of cores increase, NoC desings need to have shorter average path than classical communication methods. 3D-NoC design has been proposed to meet these demands due to its architecture, speed, average path, and power consumption. However, the routing problems for 3D is more complicated than 2D version. Since deterministic algorithms encounter congestion problems, adaptive algorithms are able to distribute the traffic load to give better results. Motivated by the effectivenes of learning algorithms, in this thesis, we present a Q-Learning based routing algorithm for 3D-NoCs to solve this type of problems. In our algorithm, each router node maintains a Q-Table and updates it by receiving the traffic information from neighboring routers. We select the output port by using the state of the router and corresponding Q-Values. We have tested our proposed method with the deterministic XYZ and 3D elevator-first West-First algorithm under different traffic models and compared the results. We have observed an 8% average performance improvement compared to the other routing algorithms.

Synthetic data generation for training and evaluation of deep learning-based computer vision models

The recent great success witnessed in computer vision field in solving high-level vision tasks such as visual object tracking, semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, and optical flow recognition is predominantly dependent on the availability of large-scale datasets, which are critical for training and testing new algorithms. Manually annotating visual data, however, is not only a time consuming process but also prone to errors and subject to privacy issues. In this work, we present NOVA, a general-purpose framework to create 3D virtual worlds populated with humans that provides pixel-level accurate ground truth annotations for many computer vision tasks. NOVA can simulate several environmental factors such as weather conditions or different times of day, and bring an exceptionally diverse and photo-realistic set of humans to life, each having a distinct appearance and features. To demonstrate NOVA's capabilities, we utilized our framework to generate photo-realistic and diverse synthetic sequences for training and testing visual object tracking algorithms. The main motivation was to show that the generated synthetic data, by our rendering engine, constitute a good proxy of its real-world counterpart and it can be deployed to boost the performance of learning based computer vision models. Particularly, our aim was to demonstrate the usability of our generated data for both training and testing computer vision models. First, we generate two different synthetic datasets for the task of pedestrian tracking. The first of these datasets is utilized to assess the performance of some state-of-the-art visual trackers on various conditions. On the other hand, we employ the second one to train deep visual trackers to improve their performances on real sequences. Our study reveals that the tested trackers perform poorly in highly crowded scenes, or at low illumination and in foggy weather conditions. Additionally, the experiments demonstrate that our generated synthetic sequences indeed present a good proxy of the real sequences and it does improve the performances of deep visual trackers under standard and normal conditions. Following this, the essential question that emerged and required thorough experiments is the capability of our synthetic data to complement the real-world one and push the limits of current available visual object tracking datasets. Bearing in mind the poor performance of the recent tracking algorithms at certain challenging conditions (as revealed by our previous experiments), we considered adverse weather conditions in more details. We provided a new person tracking dataset of real-world sequences (PTAW172Real) captured under foggy, rainy and snowy weather conditions to assess the performance of the current trackers. The considered trackers, both correlation filter -based or learning-based, showed a poor performance under these adverse weather conditions. Our experimental results link this deficiency to the lack of enough adverse weather training samples in the current visual object tracking datasets. To mitigate the problem, we extended our rendering engine to further simulate more realistic adverse weather conditions spanning foggy, rainy and snowy weather conditions. Pedestrians in rainy and snowy weathers are simulated with outdoor cold-weather clothes. Snow banks and water puddles are simulated to account for snow and water accumulations, respectively. Additionally, snow particles and rain drops are generated to match the videos in real life. In parallel to that, snow tracks left by cars and pedestrians are simulated to give more realism. Pedestrians are randomly assigned umbrellas and the suitable animation is set accordingly. At the same time, fog is simulated using post-processing effects and the Enviro system. The severeness of each of the weather conditions is randomized at run time to give more diversity for the generated sequences. Following this and harnessing the photo-realism and diversity of the simulated adverse weather condition, we provide a novel person tracking dataset of synthetic sequences (PTAW217Synth) generated by our NOVA framework spanning the same adverse weather conditions. The results demonstrated that the performances of the deep trackers under adverse weather conditions can be improved when our synthetically generated sequences are deployed for training.

Unveiling limitations in single-view 3D object reconstruction models

3D object reconstruction models typically learn from a single dataset, ShapeNetCore, and are evaluated against similar datasets that measure aspects closely related to ShapeNetCore. We tackled the problem of limited performance assessment by proposing novel benchmarks to reveal their robustness to new challenges. To demonstrate our benchmark's effectiveness, we selected three state-of-the-art models for comparison: 3D-C2FT, Pix2Vox, and Occupancy Networks. This selection covers two well-known 3D shape representations: voxel and occupancy function as an implicit representation. We first investigated the effect of changing background color on performance. We found that this seemingly simple variable causes a drastic decrease in performance. We observed that models perform sufficiently close to the original scenario with changing input object sizes in 2D. Further, we adapted a novel dataset 3DCoMPaT++ for 3D reconstruction evaluation. 3DCoMPaT++ offers rich material and part annotations. We assessed reconstruction performance by slightly changing viewpoints and varying styles in 2D input images. The results show that models struggle to adapt to novel settings. Performance degrades drastically in the best-case scenario, and surprisingly, the model performing the best in the standard ShapeNetCore experiment, Pix2Vox, scores the worst across all novel dataset experiments. We also evaluated models at the part level to identify the most challenging parts. We transferred part-level point clouds to part-annotated surface points from 3DCoMPaT++ using point cloud registration with L2 distance. We then utilized our version of F-Score@0.01, Part F-Score@0.01, for evaluation. This experiment quantitatively confirmed the known issue of poor performance in finer details and thin parts, unlike previous works that only made qualitative observations.

In recent years, the rapid advancement of drone technology has resulted in significant challenges for security and surveillance systems. Effective drone detection methods are crucial for various applications, including national security, private property protection, and safe airspace management. This thesis addresses the need for comprehensive datasets required to train robust drone detection models by leveraging simulation environments. Our approach utilizes Unreal Engine and AirSim plugin in conjunction with the AirSim GUI, a simulation environment created to generate multi-modal datasets that include both visual and audio data of drones in diverse scenarios. The primary objective of this research is to create a cost-effective and scalable method for generating high-quality datasets to improve the performance of drone detection models. We simulate a drone in a custom-built environment within Unreal Engine, capturing images and audio clips to form the dataset. The AirSim GUI allows for precise control over the simulation parameters, including the ability to spawn drones at specific coordinates, integrate various types of cameras, define flight paths, and record audio. We implemented an audio generation process that includes both real-time and offline capabilities, ensuring comprehensive coverage of possible detection scenarios. Our results demonstrate that the synthetic data generated through this method enhances the performance of drone detection models, particularly in situations where real-world data is scarce.

Robot and avatar based interactive system for children's education

The aim of this thesis is to present usable educational tools of students with special needs. Hearing impaired students cannot use text and speech based technological, educational material that is becoming a crucial tool for modern education. While they are not a direct substitute for human teachers, technological support materials in education have been shown to motivate children and aid instructors. To allow the use of such methods, three applications aimed at educating deaf children using the robot, the web, and avatar-based technologies was designed. One such technological medium that can be used to connect with such children are robots. Robots are often used in children's education by making use of their inherent personified nature compared to other non-human teaching mediums. Children prefer to interact by touching during a training session. In this study, we developed a method, where two humanoid robots namely R3 and NAO are used to perform sign language gestures to communicate with children using sign languages with creating human-like hand, arm and body gestures. The most powerful aspect of the robot is its embodiment that causes children to interact with the robot socially, rather than treating it as a simple, book like education tool. One other educational tool we have developed is a signing avatar. Like videos of signers, a signing avatar for TİD would allow communicating information in the form of visual gestures, thus becoming usable when the use of text is infeasible. However, compared to videos, animated avatars offer several advantages like easy reproducibility of gesture sequences, control of point of view, adjusting the speed of the sign and being smaller in storage and bandwidth then videos. For this thesis, a signing avatar was developed to represent a portion of the social sciences course for Turkish primary education curriculum. Finally, a web and android based experimental framework was developed to perform customized human-machine interaction experiments. Sign language and drum based interaction game schemes were developed to perform in-depth analysis of different education based modalities with users from different demographics. By performing usability studies and evaluations in a gamification, scheme using turn-taking games, the effectiveness of the described three methods were analyzed. The observations and the reactions of children demonstrate that of the three technologies implemented, robot technologies may be the most effective method for assisting children. While a prototype interaction scheme and used in controlled education settings have been constructed, in their current technology level, price range and ease of operability robots such as Nao do not present an implementable option of presenting the entire primary school corpora. For that reason, a signing avatar and recreated content from the Social Sciences corpora have been implemented. While the signing avatar an imitation of videos created by signing users, it possesses the advantage of easily synthesizing novel sequences of content from existing isolated sign videos. To analyze the success and effectiveness of the developed methods, the performance of the text, signer video and avatar-based interaction in a human-computer interaction scheme using elementary school students have been compared. The results demonstrate that of the three methods, video-based methods were the most comprehensible closely followed by avatar based methods among kids who did not know how to read. Since the aim was to make the signing avatar as comprehensible as possible, the results demonstrate that goal have been.

Resource mapping optimization for distributed cloud services

The magnitude of data being stored and processed in the Cloud is quickly increasing due to advancements in areas that rely on cloud computing, e.g. Big Data, Internet of Things and mobile code offloading. Concurrently, cloud services are getting more global and geographically distributed. To handle such changes in its usage scenario, the Cloud needs to transform into a completely decentralized, federated and ubiquitous environment similar to the historical transformation of the Internet. Indeed, research ideas for the transformation has already started to emerge including but not limited to Cloud Federations, Multi-Clouds, Fog Computing, Edge Computing, Cloudlets, Nano data centers, etc. Standardization and resource management come up as the most significant issues for the realization of the distributed cloud paradigm. The focus in this thesis is the latter: efficient management of limited computing and network resources to adapt to the decentralization. Specifically, cloud services that consist of several virtual machines, dedicated network connections and databases are mapped to a multi-provider, geographically distributed and dynamic cloud infrastructure. The objective of the mapping is to improve quality of service in a cost-effective way. To that end; network latency and bandwidth as well as the cost of storage and computation are subjected to a multi-objective optimization. The first phase of the resource mapping optimization is the topology mapping. In this phase, the virtual machines and network connections (i.e. the virtual cluster) of the cloud service are mapped to the physical cloud infrastructure. The hypothesis is that mapping the virtual cluster to a group of data centers with a similar topology would be the optimal solution. Replication management is the second phase where the focus is on the data storage. Data objects that constitute the database are replicated and mapped to the storage as a service providers and end devices. The hypothesis for this phase is that an objective function adapted from the facility location problem optimizes the replica placement. Detailed experiments under real-world as well as synthetic workloads prove that the hypotheses of the both phases are true.

A distributed human identification system for indoor environments

Nowadays "internet of things" and "robotics" topics are getting more and more popular because "state of the art" technologies are easier to be applied in our daily lives. Utilization of "internet of things" started home automation systems to use devices at home remotely. While these automation systems aim at giving access to designated areas, they also offer solutions for unauthorized access problems by keeping logs of video records and control mechanisms as well as features for more security measures. Besides, developers are able to implement and monitor video surveillance systems to support security in the IoT platforms using low cost embedded computers. This study presents an entire system, which is similar to home automation system and allows the login of a person entering a private property using face recognition system, video calls, sending notifications and having more components such as threat detection. In this study statically positioned camera systems were implemented to identify people thanks to face recognition algorithms. Captured images from fixed positioned camera systems(FPFRS) had problems to process on identification. The problems were differences in distance of people to the camera and differences caused by posing. Therefore a mobile robot that has camera, was incorporated to recognize faces of people in the environment. The mobile robot can track people and keep the distance to the people constant. Thus, the mobile robot can solve the distance problem. However, the mobile robot can not track people perfectly without miss. Sometimes it can have trouble while tracking people. Thus, integrating the mobile robot to the Fixed Positioned Face Recognition System has a big potential to deal with the face recognition problem in indoor environments. Therefore an distributed approach was proposed to recognize humans in this study. The system utilizes 1) Cameras statically mounted on wall devices (FPFRS), 2) Cameras mounted on mobile robots. FPFRS were built on a tiny embedded computer. Motion sensor and infrared camera components were used to gather data about environment. However, sometimes they can fail to recognize faces because of their fixed positions. This decreases face recognition performance of the system when FPFRS tries to recognize person from captured images. Because distance between camera and person is very important in order to obtain features of face. To improve the performance of this system proposed method given in this thesis aims at solving the problem of fixed position with robots. Therefore a mobile robot is added to improve face recognition accuracy gathering face images from certain distance and moving around face image that is aligned to the camera of robot before captured. With the help of the mobile robot, the system becomes more interactive and information gathering from environment process is done more efficiently. As a result proposed hybrid system in this study not only uses fixed positioned captured images by FPFRS but also uses images that are taken from mobile robot. To provide network communication between FPFRS and the mobile robot which are linked to in this distributed system, modified techniques are used which follow the rules of client-server approach. Each of the FPFRS and the mobile robot runs main program during scenarios. Inputs can be taken from the environment and enable the trigger mechanism. An FPFRS schedules its jobs and behaves according to the active jobs. After the job is done, FPFRS deactivates the jobs in the database records. These records can be manipulated from other devices. Thus communication and trigger mechanism between devices is established. These systems are more complex and it is hard to follow this kind of systems, actions. Architecture is designed to expand by adding new FPFRSs or mobile robots to the system and each FPFRS can communicate via server. One FPFRS and a mobile robot have scenario to capture more images of people from different positions. Then each device runs face recognizer and obtains a result which consists of name of person and confidence of face recognition score. Using the results of face recognizer, various techniques, including machine learning algorithms, are applied to improve accuracy of face recognition. In addition to choosing prediction based on highest confidence in face recognition, random forest tree, decision tree, and linear SVM methods are applied to address the issue of face recognizer improvement. Described systems are implemented and tested systematically based on various scenarios. To show the impact of the effect of changes on accuracy of face recognition system, experiments were done with and without the mobile robot. The proposed system was evaluated using 1)Face recognition scores on a face database, 2)Performance of video calls, and 3)Case scenarios performed on human test subjects. We have verified the effectivity of our approach by using six scenarios. In the first scenario button triggered human identification has been evaluated. In the second scenario motion triggered human identification has been analyzed. In the third scenario human identification using rotational tracking has been investigated. In the fourth scenario human identification using displacement tracking has been examined. In the fifth scenario human identification using displacement and voice combined tracking has been illustrated. In the sixth scenario human identification using robot initiated dialog has been analyzed. One or more FPFRS and the mobile robot have scenario to route the mobile robot to capture images of people on designated area of motion sensor triggered FPFRS based on the scenarios given above.
