The effect of Pakistan's fight against terrorism after 11 September 2001 on national security of Afghanistan

Pakistan and Afghanistan have many common features beyond being two border countries. These countries have problems from the past (Durand Line and Pashtunistan Issue). In addition to these problems, especially after the 1979 USSR invasion of Afghanistan, issues such as religious extremist groups, terrorist organizations and the phenomenon of terrorism between Pakistan and Afghanistan emerged as issues that would threaten these countries, the region and international security. The phenomenon of terrorism has been one of the biggest problems of Afghanistan and Pakistan since the 1990s, and both countries are struggling to survive against the cancer of terrorism in their own lands. The terrorist attacks against the United States of America (USA) on September 11, 2001, the United States intervened in Afghanistan with an international coalition called the "War on Terrorism" operation. Pakistan also sided with the USA in this war and played an active role in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan. The international coalition forces and Pakistan managed to neutralize the terrorist groups in the first years of the struggle, the terrorist groups suffered great losses and many fled to the provinces on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and found shelter. However, in the following years, these groups became more active and resorted to more violent and impressive actions against the states of Afghanistan and Pakistan. After this period, both countries faced a wave of terrorism and political actors, and policy makers tried to find solutions to effectively implement counter-terrorism strategies and to ensure peace. In this context, the aim of the research is to examine the Effect of Pakistan's Struggle Against Terrorism After September 11, 2001 on Afghanistan's National Security. This research seeks answers to the following questions: How and in what way did Pakistan's fight against terrorism affect Afghanistan's security? What is Pakistan doing in Afghanistan? What benefits does Pakistan seek in Afghanistan? Will Pakistan's national interests be secured by supporting and strengthening terrorist groups and the Taliban in Afghanistan?
