Abstract (EN)

This thesis aimed to investigate and study "Al-Hafni's Commentary (Hashiyah) on Al-Saad Al-Tiftazani's Grandson", The importance of the study lies in shedding light on "Talakhis Al-Miftah" by Al-Khateeb Al-Qazwini, which is considered the main reference in the field of rhetoric, as it is one of the important summaries of this book. This commentary includes the opinions of a group of rhetoric scholars such as Al-Fanari (d. 886 AH), Al-Hafidh (d. 916 AH), Al-Yazdi (d. 981 AH), Al-Sheikh Al-Malwi (1181 AH), Al-Sheikh Yassin Al-Alimi (d. 1061) and others, found only in this book. The study sheds light on the scientific and personal character of Al-Hafnawi, one of the most prominent scholars in 12th-century Egypt, who held the position of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar Mosque for ten years. The researcher followed a descriptive-historical approach in defining Sheikh Al-Hafni's work, employing investigative and commentary methods when comparing manuscript versions to identify and highlight discrepancies. Three handwritten copies from the Al-Azhar Library were utilized. Additionally, efforts were made to attribute statements to their sources in the rhetorical issues discussed by the author, and to provide references for Quranic verses, poetic verses, and hadiths mentioned in the text wherever possible. One of the prominent findings of the study is as follows: The Al-Hāshiyah contains rhetorical benefits and unique anecdotes that had not been previously studied or scrutinized, it included valuable significant insights that have clarified many issues raised by Al-Sa'd's grandson and the objections made against him, making it a valuable source of rhetoric. The marginal notes predominantly convey the meanings of statements and opinions, which posed challenges in documenting and attributing them accurately. The author heavily employs a logical and eloquent style inspired by the grandson and Al-Tifāzānī. Al-Hafnī was impartial and meticulous in his corrections and criticisms of the grandson and others, stating: "There is room for interpretation." He weighed evidence based on rational and linguistic reasoning, demonstrating his scholarly character, intellectual independence, and extensive knowledge. Al-Hafnawi's work was also utilized by subsequent scholars like Mustafa al-Banani (d. after 1237) in his abridgment of al-Sa'd al-Taftezani, and Shams Muhammad al-Anbabi (1313 AH) in his commentary on al-Muftah's explanation of al-Taftezani, and other scholars.
