Abstract (EN)
The 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş epicentre earthquake, which went down in history as the disaster of the century, left many damaged buildings in its wake. This disaster has initiated an important questioning on the earthquake safety and durability of the buildings in our country. In particular, the selection of materials against earthquakes and the adequacy of building earthquake regulations have been seriously discussed. At this point, the importance of updated regulations and material selection in order to improve the performance of structures is even more understood. In order to minimize building damages, earthquake codes have been updated with amendments and additions. The renewal of earthquake codes and optimization of material selection aim to reduce the loss of life and property by ensuring that structures are less damaged during earthquakes. In this study, compared to previous researches, two different material choices were made and compared in accordance with both earthquake codes. The main objective of the study is to reveal the effects of the updated codes and material choices on the earthquake safety of the structure. The structures designed within the scope of the study represent a 6-storey highly ductile moment-transmitting steel frame system on one side and a 6-storey reinforced concrete structure on the other side. Detailed analyses were performed for both types of structures using SAP2000 analysis software. In these analyses, various factors such as earthquake ground motion, live loads, dead loads were taken into consideration and accordingly acceleration spectrum was determined and analyses were performed. Parameters such as relative story drift, story stiffnesses, shear forces (foundation, stories), vibration period were analyzed in the evaluation of the analysis results. In addition, static calculation results obtained during the design of both structures are presented and compared. The study emphasizes the positive effects of the updated regulations on building safety. It is observed that the structures designed according to TBDY 2018 give more advantageous results. These findings show that TBDY 2018 regulations enable the design of more efficient and safer structures in terms of earthquake performance. The study reveals that current earthquake codes play an important role in ensuring life safety by increasing the durability of structures.
