The transcription and analysis of The Rumelia jurnal register numbered 3247

With the abolition of the Janissaries the Ottoman Empire applied numerous reforms. These reforms included the Jurnal Organization, which ensures the continual information flow from the countryside to the center. Among the Jurnal Defters that were sent from the countryside to the center at certain intervals, the ones that were considered important were also recorded by the Jurnal extract clerk (Jurnal Hülasa Kâtibi) in the Journal Defters. The type of Defter examined in this thesis is a Hülasa defter which belongs to Rumeli region. In the defter, there are numerous Jurnal registers providing detailed information in relation to Rumeli region. Some of the issues mentioned in the defters are birth and deaths, the newly established Asakir-i Mansure and Redif Military organizations, unknown celestial objects, strange events, such as witches, vampires, agricultural activities, disasters, and repair and construction activities. Although Jurnal Defters have the potential of providing information for historians on many subjects, they are not comprehensively studied by scholars. The aim of the thesis is to present the diversity and characteristics of the subjects included in the Jurnal Hülasa Defters, as well as information on military, social, health, extraordinary and economic issues belonging to Rumeli region at the defter was recorded.
