The examination of starting the primary school of 60-72 month children

In this study, receiving opinions of classroom teachers of 1st and 2nd grades with 4+4+4 system, it is aimed to detect problems of 60-month kids starting school and being in the same class with 60-72 month kids. Also it is aimed to identify problems related to adaptation of 60-72 month kids to school. The study has been implemented with the classroom teachers (350 of them) of 1st and 2nd grades in primary schools belonging to the Ministry of Education in Bitlis. Analysis of quantitative data was performed on computer and in the analysis of some data, descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean were used. The findings of our study show that when the developmental status of 60-72 month kids are analyzed, just chronological age of a kid is not sufficient for schooling, and it is also necessary for a kid to maturate mentally, socially, physically and emotionally. It is found out that kids who continue to pre-school education are more successful and families should be informed about child development. It is revealed that major problems are having difficulty in communicating with their teachers and friends and leaving their families, inadequate writing and self-expression skills, understanding 1st grade compliance books and schedule and self-care skills. It is also found out that in the teaching process of 60-72 month kids, teachers teach according to their level and are aware of their needs; kids's starting school well affects their future education; the policy of having kids of different ages in the same classroom causes problems, and 60-month kids should go to the kindergarden. It shows that prior to starting primary school, kids should take tests that can evaluate his/her readiness to school.
