Mythological routes of the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean, which has been home to countless civilizations from ancient times to the present day and which is seen as a miniature of the whole world with its climate, landforms, civilizations, is also important in mythology. It is not possible to fully distinguish the mythological voyages that took place in the Mediterranean geography from the historical and geographical facts, given the routes and characteristics of the period. Indeed, Iason and the Argonauts, Odysseus, Aeneas and other mythological routes in the Mediterranean offer us a unique treasure of the Mediterranean geography, mining, trade networks, way of life, political perception, religious beliefs, shipbuilding and seafaring of the period. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the reasons and results of the mythological Mediterranean journeys, which have been transferred to the present day through numerous sources and which are still inspiring for many branches of Science, the connections of the routes with the real Mediterranean geography, in the light of ancient and modern sources. In addition, the mythological voyages in the Mediterranean were made systematic and combined under a single source and the aim was to complete the lack of literature in this area. Especially considering the lack of studies focusing on the travel routes of Iason and Argonauts, ancient and modern sources have been studied in depth and complex information has been made more systematic. While the mythological routes of the Mediterranean were discussed, the present-day localizations of the ambiguous places were discussed on the basis of evidence and possibilities. Since the majority of the resources related to these routes are focused on events rather than localizations, this work, which is based on routes and localizations, has also been supported by maps.
