Idioms in Ali Şîr Nevâyî's divan named Nevâdirü'ş-Şebâb

Idioms are smallest units reflecting the culture, beliefs, and worldview of societies. Within the framework of language, structures are needed to provide concise and effective expressions like idioms. Like many languages, Turkish also has a significant number of idioms. Idioms can also provide clues about a nation's history. For example, when we look at the idiom "Bugün Mahmud olmadan yarın Ayaz olmayı iste" (Desire to be Ayaz without Mahmud today), the Mahmud and Ayaz referred to are the ruler Mahmud of Ghazni and his loyal servant Ayaz. Through these historical figures, the idiom indicates thoughts related to mystical and selfless devotion and servitude. Acquiring even samll pieces of information about both historical figures and the beliefs of a society through idioms is quite valuable. In this study, idioms found in Nevâdirü'ş-Şebâb, a divan written by Ali Şîr Nevâyî during his youth and which made significant contributions to the development of Chagatai literary language, have been extensively examined. Nevâdirü'ş-Şebâb, prepared as a doctoral thesis by Metin Karaörs and published, is Nevâyî's second divan. This second divan of the poet consists of poems written during the youth period, between the ages of twenty and thirty-five, with emotions and thoughts belonging to that era, events experienced in the steppes and plains during that period, Turkish national customs such as the love of horses, wrestling, and javelin throwing, conversations between heroes, and poems written solely with the values of youth, and the strangeness of youth. This extensive work, consisting of 551 ghazals and 5417 couplets along with various poems, also provides significant data in terms of idiom presence. So far, a translation covering the entirety of Nevâdîrü'ş-Şebâb has not been made. For a poet like Nevâyî, whose language is layered in terms of meaning and whose poems are adorned with metaphors, the couplets containing idioms in this work have been translated into Turkish with minimal loss of meaning. In the fist part of the work, more than 1000 idioms have been identified and alphabetically sorted by being translated into turkish. In the second part of the study, three different indexes related to these idioms have been created. The first index is composed of 64 headings based on the conceptual fields evoked by idioms. The second index is given as "founder names", and the third index is given as "founder actions". Finally, the data obtained in the examination section has been assessed in the conclusion part of the thesis through various tables.
