Representation of fear in animation and an example application film

Fear has been one of the most powerful emotional states throughout human history. On the basis of all the fear, especially the fear of death is obscurity. Obscurity creates a state of anxiety instead of fear. Humankind symbolizes everything that is unknown by folding it into a form and content to cope with the anxiety brought by obscurity. Unknown events and objects primarily materialized in oral and written literature in forms such as ghouls, djinns, and ghosts and became one of the main subjects of mythology and religion. Along with the invention of cinema, horror symbols have gained a new field and added new ones its forms and meanings from the past or transformed them. Animation medium started using fear symbols long before than cinema and was able to provide a limitless world owing to its ability to transform unknown to a specific form and content. Thus, the strong relationship between fear symbols and animation has survived up to this day. In this study, how fear symbols and conventions came to establish a relationship with animation in the past was examined and how they are treated in animated films that have gained the appreciation of broad masses has been analysed. The results demonstrate how fear is represented in current animated films and emphasize the importance of fear for animated cinema by providing specific templates. Finally, a short film was made based on the results of the study.
