Relationship between adipoz tissue and inflammation in ankylosing spondylitis patients

We aimed in this study to determine changes of plasma leptin and visfatin levels and their relevance with disease activity, accompanying osteoporosis and body mass index in Ankylosing Spondylitis patients. We measured plasma leptin, visfatin TNF alpha, ESR, CRP levels and BMI of 52 Ankylosing Spondylitis patients and 36 age and sex-matched healty control subjects. Patients divided in two groups according to BASDAI as active or inactive disease. We measured ESR, CRP and TNF alpha levels as inflammation parameters of both patients and healty subjects. We observed that TNF alpha level were significantly corolated with disease activity indexes and higher in AS patients than controls but no difference between two groups for both leptin and visfatin level. TNF alpha level was determined higher in active patients than inactive patients but no difference between two groups for both leptin and visfatin level. Leptin level was only correlate with BMI in both AS and controls. There was no difference between AS and controls for BMI. Our results show that leptin and visfatin level are not clearly related with inflammation in AS patients and only related with BMI.Keywords: Ankylosing Spondylitis, Leptin, Visfatin
