Abstract (EN)
In this study, a descriptive and relational research model was used to determine the mediating role of emotional intelligence on these attitudes, while investigating the effects of negative experiences that mothers encountered in their childhood on parenting attitudes. The sample of study consists of 419 mothers living in Trabzon. The data collection tools used in the research are as follows: Personal Information Form, Family Life and Child-Rearing Attitude Scale, Short Form Childhood Negative Lives Scale and Emotional Intelligence Scale. It is observed that all scales differ when examined according to the educational status of the participants, their employment status, their income, the number of children they have, their relationships with their mothers and fathers, and the discipline style of their parents. As a result of the study, it was partially concluded that emotional intelligence plays a protective role between the childhood trauma experiences of mothers and their parenting attitudes. It was concluded that as the childhood abuse experiences of mothers increased, negative parental attitudes increased, democratic parental attitude scores decreased, and emotional intelligence scores also decreased. It was concluded that the mothers' democratic attitude and emotional intelligence scores increased as their educational status did increased. In addition to these results it has not been concluded that the mothers who had distant relationships with their parents showed higher scores of negative parental attitudes (overly protective, oppressive/disciplined) and lower scores of democratic parental attitudes; it is also not found that the mothers whom were applied positive discipline ways (constructive/rewarding) by their parents displayed more positive parental attitudes (democratic parental attitudes) unlike mothers who had been applied with negative discipline (overly strict/punishing, strict and idled/overly idled).
