Abstract (EN)

This study aims to investigate the effects of consuming elderberry at different frequencies and durations on sports performance and some physiological parameters. 19 male athletes between the ages of 18 and 23 were included in the study. The study consists of 2 groups. The groups are: the athlete group consuming elderberry supplements and the athlete control group. The study consists of 4 stages. The first stage is the pre-test stage, and the athletes' demographic information (age, height, etc.) and food consumption records were taken, and the treadmill protocol was applied. In the second, third, and fourth stages, the athletes were given food supplements at different frequencies and durations, and the measurements were repeated. In the study, the Astrand Treadmill Treadmill Test, lactic acid measurement, blood parameters, and food consumption records were used as data collection tools. A statistical package program was used to evaluate the statistical analysis of the study. Under the assumption that all values have a normal distribution, the Shapiro-Wilk test, which is preferred in small data sets, was used. It was determined that all values showed a normal distribution in the test results. Measurements made to evaluate the effects of elderberry supplementation applied at different times were analyzed by the Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance method. Bonferroni and Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests were used to determine significant differences between measurements. All test results were evaluated by accepting the significance level as "p<0.05". According to the findings, it was determined that elderberry supplementation consumed regularly in 7 doses every other day reduced plasma lactate level at the 3rd minute of exercise and also helped increase Glutathione level. It was also observed that elderberry supplementation consumed regularly may help reduce the Malondialdehyde level, and elderberry supplementation taken regularly every other day for 7 and 14 days reduced the Nitric Oxide level. It is generally thought that elderberry supplementation improves antioxidant status in athletes, and this situation is thought to be probably due to the increase in Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione activities.
