Abstract (EN)
Introduction and Aim: Tobacco use is accepted as a cureable chronic disease including unsuccessful quit attempts meaning recurrences. There is many factors that effects the success of the treatment. The aim of this study is to determine factors which cause failure in quitting smoking and relevance of them. Materials and Methods: This is a case control study carried out between January 1st 2016 and July 15th 2016. Patients whom applied smoking cessation clinic in Atatürk Training and Research Hospital Family Medicine Clinicand had followed up at least 6 months were included in the study. Patients with at least 3 months of abstinence constituted the control group. Data was computerised and analysed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 15.0. Results: 82 patients in case group, 116 patients in control group and total of 198 patients were included. Female/male ratio was found 0.33. The mean age of participants was 43.6 ± 11.6 years. Logistic regression analysis indicated that less than 2 quit attempts, consuming more than 15 cigarettes per day and having a chronic disease increases risk of unsuccessful quit attempt, whilehaving a child decreases the risk of unsuccessful quit attempt. Conclusion: Smoking cessation is important in all age groups. Preventing smoking initiation among young people and helping people who want to quit smoking must be goals of all physicians. Pharmacological treatment must be considered in patients with high nicotine dependence scores. Patients who had unsuccessful quit attempts in the past should bemotivated and explained that success of quit attempts increase after the first attempts.
