Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT In this study we have tried to analyse the European discourse in French, that is, we have tackled with it as a language of communication in the European Union. We have studied the status quo of franch and the foreign language teaching policies of the Union countries. We have scrutinized the programs applied and the studies carried out in the Union by exemplifying the short history of the foreign language teaching methods. Hence, we have concluded that the foreign language teaching plays an important role in the Union countries and that two languages apart from the mother langue have been adopted to establish a successful rapport among the European citizens and to abolish all kinds of prejudice and discrimination. In this context, we have maintained that Turkey as a country which has applied for the membership should give great importance to the foreign language teaching. In the second chapter of our study, we have attempted to deal whit the European discourse in French; that is, we have taken French as a communicational discourse in the European Union. We have taken the various publications of the European Union in this stady such as newspapers, periodicals, books and brochures. We have figured out that there is an "European language" in the analysis of the texts. It is a common language, it is a common means which exists in the eleven languages of the European Union, it is a communicational strategy. We can formulate this in the following way: VIIEuropean language» nationals languages + communicationals strategys This common language is in use in terms of politics, economics and culture. The common forms are perceived in the semantic structures of the underlying meanings beyond the words and sentences. This shows that the languages of European Union are apt to turn into isomorphism, and it is often used especially in the similar structures (for example slogans). This discourse is based on the common cultural images, and it reflects the european spirit into the discourse. Among the most important characteristics of the European language are the newly coined words, abreviations and slogans. We think the abreviations constitute the most significant group, they are generally chosen from the words wiht connotative meanings. The third chapter is devoded to the use of media in the European Union and its importance in terms of the communicational theories. The second part is about the poster issued by the Union as a visual communication means. In this study, we have tried to utilize the theories of the most prominent linguists such as Hjelmslev, Greimas, Saussure and to base our research on their principles. vni
