Optimization of truss structures with discrete variables using modified harmony search algorithm

Abstract (EN)

In this study, Modified harmony search algorithm (MHS) is used for the optimum design of truss structures with discrete variables. The harmony search, bases on the analogy between the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony and searching for solutions to optimization problems. The objective of the optimum design is to obtain minimum weight truss structures under the displacement and stress constraints. 52 member plane truss structure and 25, 72 member space truss structures, which were optimized previously using harmony search, heuristic particle swarm optimization, particle swarm ant colony optimization, mine blast algorithm, the enhanced accelerated firefly algorithm, colliding bodies optimization and teaching-learning based optimization, are used to test the efficiency of modified harmony search algorithm. The results obtained from modified harmony search algorithm are compared with the results obtained from these methods. The comparisons showed that the modified harmony search algorithm yielded lighter truss structures designs. Key Words: Modified harmony search, Optimum design, Truss structures
