Abstract (EN)

In this study, the antibacterial activities of the extracts of lavender (Lavandula officinalis), epicalyx (Althaea officinalis), St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), daphne (Laurus nobilis), green tea (Camellia sinensis), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), olive leaf (Olea europaea) and parsley (Petroselinum crispum) obtained by different solvents were tested on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. The naturally dried plants were obtained from herbalist shops and their extracts were obtained using ethanol, distilled water, and hexane using Soxhlet extraction. Antibiogram technique was applied with agar well diffusion method in triplicates. Green tea, St. John's wort, daphne leaf, olive leaf and epicalyx extracts were determined to have inhibition effect on bacteria when compared with the reference antibiotic. The most effective solvent for green tea was distilled water and ethanol was the best for the other plants; while hexane was not an appropriate solvent for the Soxhlet extraction.
