Investigation of the effects of leadership styles implemented by physical education and sports teachers on sports characters of students

This study, which was conducted to ınvestigation of the effects of leadership styles ımplemented by physical education and sports teachers on sports characters of students was revealed by using an explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed method models. In the quantitative part of the research; the study universe constitutes of students and physical education and sports teachers who participate in education in private and government primary education institutions in the central districts of Antalya (Kepez, Muratpaşa, Konyaaltı, Aksu, Döşemealtı) during the 2020-2021 school years. The sample of the study was consisted of simple random sampling method from students and physical education and sports teachers attending private and public primary education institutions in Antalya central districts in the 2020-2021 academic year. 1929 (n=1001 female, n=928 male) students and 224 (n=104 female, n=120 male) physical education and sports teachers. For the collection of quantitative data in the research; Personal information form from teachers and students, Teacher Leadership Styles Scale from teachers and Sports Character Scale from students were used. Before analyzing the quantitative data, the normal distribution test was applied to the data. T-test, one of the parametric tests, for two normally distributed independent variables and one-way analysis of variance Anova tests were used for more than two independent variables. Structural equation modeling (YEM) was used to test the models created in the research. The qualitative part of the research, the study group consists of 224 (n=104 female, n=120 male) physical education and sports teachers who attend public and private primary education institutions in the central districts of Antalya for the 2020-2021 academic year. The study group was determined by the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling approaches. The qualitative data of the research were obtained by semi-structured interview technique. In the study, content analysis technique was used to make inferences from the qualitative data. Generally; In addition to the fact that the leadership styles applied by physical education and sports teachers do not have a statistically significant effect on student sports characters, different leadership styles of physical education and sports teachers affect students' sports characters in different ways. The most effective and ineffective leadership style of physical education and sports teachers in creating sports character on students varies depending on the characteristics of the students. From this point of view, it has emerged that physical education and sports teachers should determine leadership styles according to current situations (student and educational status) instead of a fixed leadership style. On the other hand, physical education and sports teachers should stay away from authoritarian leadership style. It has been concluded that if physical education and sports teachers are hesitant to determine the leadership style they will use, they should prefer a semi-democratic leadership style and thanks to this, students can achieve more positive results on sports characters.
