The relationship between intolerance of uncertainty, problem solving, and suicide: A moderated mediation model

The aims of current study are to examined the suicidal behaviors of individuals in the control group and in the risk group for suicide; the mediating role of problem solving in the relationship between intolerance to uncertainty and suicide probability; the moderating roles of social support, time perspective, and religious coping in the indirect relationship between intolerance to uncertainty and the suicide probability through problem solving. In line with this purposes the sample of the study consists of 480 individuals, including oncology (120), gastroenterology (120), psychiatry (120) patient group and control group (120). When the demographic characteristics of the sample are examined; It was seen that the youngest group was Psychiatry, the oldest group was Oncology, women, unemployed, married and those who stated that their income and expenses matched each other, and lastly, the patient groups had more than 6 months in terms of diagnosis and treatment times. Patients who applied to Aydın Adnan Menderes University Polyclinic of Oncology and Polyclinic of Gastroenterology, Aydın Adnan Menderes University Polyclinic of Psychiatry, Aydın State Hospital Polyclinic of Psychiatry and Aydın Atatürk State Hospital Polyclinic of Psychiatry were included in the study. Data from the participants were collected through Demographic Form, Revised Social Problem Solving Inventory-Short Form, Suicide Probability Scale, Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Religous Coping Scale-Short Form. The analysis results of the study revealed that the participants in the Psychiatry group were more likely to show suicidal ideation and attempt; that problem solving significantly mediated the relationship between intolerance to uncertainty and suicide probability; and that social support and past negative, present fatalistic, and present hedonistic time perspectives significantly moderated the indirect relationship between intolerance to uncertainty and the suicide probability through problem solving. Finally, the findings obtained from the study were discussed in the light of the literature, the limitations of the study were addressed, the clinical implications of the study were mentioned, and suggestions were made for future studies.
