Evaluation of the effects of whitening toothpastes on the surface and discolouration properties of universal shade composite resins

The aim of our study is to evaluate the color change and surface roughness of whitening toothpastes with different active ingredients in Omnichroma, Charisma Topaz One, which is marketed as a single shade composite material, and Estelite Sigma Quick composite resin as a control composite. The toothpastes used in our study are Colgate Optic White Expert, Flash White Smile Whitening Toothpaste and as control paste Ipana Sağlıklı Gülüşler Toothpaste. In our study, as n=8, nine groups were determined. Vita Easyshade Advance and Perthometer, M2 profilometer device were used for color and surface roughness measurements, respectively. After the initial color measurements and surface roughness values of the samples were recorded, the samples were kept in a coffee solution. The measurements were repeated before and after brushing the samples with different toothpastes. SEM images were obtained. One-Way Anova test was used in comparisons of three or more groups showing normal distribution. The Repeated Measures test was used to examine the three time-dependent changes of the measurements, and the Paired Samples T test was used for the two time-dependent changes, and the significance was evaluated at p<0.01 and p<0.05. When the tested materials were evaluated in terms of color change values (ΔE002) resulting from different toothpaste application, ΔE002 was ranked as CTO>OM>ESQ in COW and IPN groups, and ESQ>OM>CTO in FLS group. When the surface roughness changes caused by the toothpastes were evaluated, there was no significant difference in terms of toothpastes in all composite groups.
