The relationship between fear of movement and mobilization levels of patients with brain tumor surgery

The study was carried out to examine the relationship between fear of movement and mobilization levels in patients who had brain tumor surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with 80 patients who had undergone surgery for a brain tumor in the Neurosurgery clinics of Hacettepe University Medical Faculty Hospital and Ankara Bilkent City Hospital between April and October 2022. Data were collected using questionary form, Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale, Patient Mobility Scale, and Observer Mobility Scale. Frequency tables, descriptive statistics and methods such as Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, Bonferroni correction were used in the analysis of the data. It was determined that 53.7% of the patients were female, the average age was 46.78±15.71 (years), 58.7% had no history of falling before, and 68.7% were not afraid of falling during mobilization. The Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale value of patients evaluated on the 1st day in comparison to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th days and also the 2nd day value in comparison to the 3rd and 4th day values was found to be significantly higher (ꭓ2=156.210; p=0.000). A significant difference was found between the values of the Patient Mobility Scale and the Observer Mobility Scale of the patients. 1st day values, in comparison to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day values; 2nd day values, in comparison to 3rd and 4th day values; 3rd day value in comparison to the 4th day value was found to be significantly higher (ꭓ2=162,920; p=0,000, ꭓ2=193,442; p=0,000). A statistically significant difference was found in terms of Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale, Patient Mobility Scale and Observer Mobility Scale values on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th days according to previous experience of falling and having fear of falling (p<0.05). When the relationship between the scales is examined; it was determined that there was a moderate and statistically significant positive correlation between the scales used on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th days (p<0.05). In conclusion, it was determined that the mobilization levels of patients who had brain tumor surgery decreased as their fear of movement increased after surgery. Related nurses should evaluate patients' fear of movement and mobilization levels, encourage them for mobilization, and an interdisciplinary team that includes relevant training programs should be created.
