The problems of computer technology and programming education program

This research has been done for determining the problems of ComputerTechnology and Programming education program, which is one of the two-yearvocational college's technical programs. Students, employers and teaching stuffparticipated in this research with their ideas. This is a descriptive study done within theresearch tecnnique of general survey model. For this reason; teaching stuff and studentscontributed this research with their ideas about the peresent system of students'acceptance to these vocational colleges. Teachig stuff with their ideas about the printededucational program of Computer Technology and Programming; teaching stuff andsenior students with their ideas about the paralellism between pro-licience educationprogram of Computer Technology and Programming and the computer departments ofVocational and Technical Secondary Schools and liecence programs assisted thisresearch. The ideas of teaching stuff and senior students about the aims, contents,teaching process, evaluation process, training activities, the conditions of employmentfor graduated students, guidance and free-time activities of Computer Technology andProgramming education program are applied for this research. The ideas of employersabout students, employment conditions,training activities and the ideas ofemployers,teaching stuff and students about how to solve the general problems andquestions of Computer Technologyand Programming education program contributed tothis research.This reseach was held in vocational colleges linked to Çukurova University andbussiness places which do data processing sector in Adana. 22 teaching stuff from 6vocational collleges, 214 senior students and employers of 5 bussiness places of dataprocessing sector are taken as models for this research.The data in this research was collected by surveying all the related literature andusing semi-conctructed interview and questionnaire forms which were prepared in thelight of experts' ideas. To analyze the data of this research, the dispersion of percentageand frequency was used.The results achieved are as following:1. The system applied for accepting students to vocational colleges is notconfirmed or is partly confirmed. The system which let students enter thevocational and technical colleges without any examinations lower the quality ofeducation in these colleges.2. It is understood that the training program of Computer Technology andProgramming should be prepared with the cooperation with other colleges, YÖKand the authoritatives of data processing sector.3. The paralellism between pro- liecence training program of ComputerTechnology and Programming, vocational and technical secondary schhols andcomputer departments of liecence programs is partly.4. In the printed education program of Computer Technology and Programming, asthe elements of program, the aim and the behaviours are taken place in detailwhereas the information about the other elements of program is not satifactory.5. The objectives supposed to be gained with Computer Technology andProgramming education program can be acquired by the students in theintermediate level.6. The element of content of Computer Technology and Programming educationprogram inc1udes the daily and valid information partly.7. During the lessons, the narration and labrotary methods are frequent1y usedwhereas direct method, solving problem, groupwork, demostration and projectmethods are sometimes used.8. To achieve a better teaching and learning atmosphere, the materials are usedfrequently. However there are some problems about using the materials becauseof not having enough amount of some materials, some teachers' attitude towardsusing materials and students' indifference to the materials.9. Computer labrotary and electronic and equ pment workshop exist in all thevocational high schools where this research was surveyed.However, It wasobserved that only one of them has a language labrotary and a basic sciencelabrotary. The workshops and labrotary are partly equipped with all theneccessary equipments which are applied for the education programme10. In training activities based on industry, there are some problems caused by theschool, teachers and employers.11. For testing and evaIuation activities, the practice examination aiming to theproduct and essay technics are given place whereas, as testing and evaluationtechnics, behaviour lists and observation forms are taken place very little.12. The graduates of Computer Technology and Programming department are partlyequipped well enough to employ in labour force market.13. The graduated students need to have additional certificate programs foremployment but in the vocational colleges these certificate programs are notorganized in the vocational colleges.14. There is no counselor service to take care of the academic and personal problemsof the students in vocational colleges.15. In the college, the work of observing the graduated students is done partly by theindividual efforts (sacrifice) of the teaching stuff.16. It was observed that, as free time activities, sports, music and folklore activitiesare taken place, however, as the place for practicing and materials are notsatifactory, theatre, literature and fine arts are given place very little.17.
