Abstract (EN)
Design is a discipline that needs to be incorporated in almost every field. Industrial design, a specialized sub-field of design, requires its practitioners to be versatile. It emerges with both production and application. Industrial design plays a very important role by establishing a bridge between what can be produced and what can be defined as art. This offers and strengthens its role to create tangible artifacts that reflects imagination in various disciplines. One of these disciplines is cinema industry, especially science-fiction genre. Science-fiction genre covers items or artifacts that are non-existent or to be designed. These sometimes refer to universes or realities with in-depth details, or a novel utility or an item which is used by any character that lives in these realities. These items could either be just for visual representation, or they are needed to be working prototypes in different occassions. Industrial designers role and importance in this field can be examined and understood by either analyzing various artifacts or products, and their areas of usage. It can also be proposed that breaking these "designed pieces" into sub-topics may help industrial designers to be more active and needed in this field of work. This study starts by defining industrial design. After creating a groundwork, stages of design and its application processes, and its historical development thoroughly examined. On the other hand this study covers what science-fiction is, what can be stated as its sub-topics, how it is connected to different disciplines, and forms of art such as literature, or cinema. Relationship between industrial design and science-fiction is analyzed with the information presented and in the lights of these two sections. Subtopics emerged from this relationship is examined in this section as well. Relationship between industrial design and science-fiction genre in cinema is examined in two sections. One of them is "Analyzing Industrial Design Elements in Science-Fiction Movies over Selected Examples". This section covers analysis of two different movies: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner. Settings that are created by "designed elements", products and byproducts, or vehichles, which are either designed or existing, are also studied for each movie. In the other section named "Analysis of Character Design with Perspective of Archetypes" covers Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Mad Max: Fury Road. First a groundwork laid based on the ideas of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung's different identity archetypes. After that characters, utilities that these characters use, settings that characters are placed in, outfits, or vehicles are studied to identify the framework of how design is either associated or utilised. In the final section of the paper, importance of industrial design in different phases of production in science-fiction movies is specified based on the analysis done throughout the study. It is also proposed that how an industrial designer can apply design principles to this particular field or what a researcher can further study on this area.
