Abstract (EN)

Objective: This study was planned to evaluate the patient safety culture and care role orientations of nurses working in surgical clinics of a city hospital. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted between 12 February - 21 February 2024 using a personal information form, patient safety culture scale and care role orientations scale. The sample of the study consisted of 119 nurses working in surgical clinics at Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşcıoğlu City Hospital who agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected through 'Personal Information Form', 'Patient Safety Culture Scale (PSCS)' and 'Nursing Care Role Orientation Scale (NCROS)' forms. After obtaining consent from the nurses participating in the study, they were asked to fill in the data collection forms and the completed forms were collected one by one. SPSS 15.0 for Windows software was used to analyse the data obtained from the study. Written permission was obtained from the ethics committee and the institution where the study was conducted. Results: According to the results of the study, it was determined that 82.4% of the nurses participating in the study were female, 66.4% were between the ages of 18-29, 52.9% had been working for 1-5 years, 84% had a bachelor's degree, 27.7% worked in the General Surgery clinic, 76.5% cared for 15 or more patients, and 87.4% received training on patient safety. The Cronbach's alpha value of the HSC scale was found to be 0.967. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be highly reliable. The Cronbach's alpha value of the HPSRS was found to be 0.697. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be highly reliable. It was found that there was a negative and very weak correlation between HGKÖ and HBROÖ, and there was a negative and weak correlation between the 'Autonomy' sub-dimension (p<0.05). According to age groups, 'Management and leadership' sub-dimension of HGKÖ was statistically significantly higher in the 30-39 age group than in the 18-29 age group, and 'Unexpected event' was statistically significantly higher in the 40-49 age group than in the 18-29 age group (p<0.05). According to the length of service, the 'Management and leadership' and 'Unexpected event' scores of the HOSQ were found to be statistically significantly higher in those with 10 years and above than in those with 1-5 years (p<0.05). According to the status of receiving patient safety training, it was found that the scores of 'Management and leadership', 'Training of employees', 'Unexpected event' and 'Care environment' from the HGKÖ and its sub-dimensions were statistically significantly higher than those who did not receive training (p<0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the total score and the sub-dimensions of 'management and leadership', 'training of employees', 'employee behaviour' and 'autonomy', one of the sub-dimensions of HOSRS, according to the unit of employment (p<0.05). It was found that 'management and leadership', one of the sub-dimensions of HGKÖ, had a weak, positive and statistically significant relationship with age and tenure, and 'unexpected event' sub-dimension had a weak, positive and statistically significant relationship with age (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of the study show that safety culture is established in the hospital and patient care role orientation is at a moderate level. A negative and very weak correlation was found between HGKÖ and HBROÖ. Keywords: Patient Safety, Patient Safety Culture, Nursing, Care Role, Care Role Orientation
