Bitlis province settlement unit names (Province district town center settlements)

Place Name Science, whose subject is to examine place names, reveals the link between the culture and geography of a nation. At the same time, place name science is of great importance in terms of indicating the lands where a nation has lived throughout history. In order to understand the cultural structure of people living in certain geography, it is important to examine the place names there. The language that people use, just like their values, beliefs and lifestyles, also manifests itself in the naming of settlements. In this respect, one of the most important ways of getting to know a settlement in all aspects, regardless of its size, is to examine the place names used here from various aspects. In this study, the names of settlements in province, districts and town centers of Bitlis province, which hosted many communities throughout history, were examined in terms of their origin, structure, meaning and reason for being given. In this study, in which a total of 136 settlements were examined, first of all, information about the geographical location, socio-economic structure, settlement status, residents, historical characteristics and demographic structure of the settlements was given. Then, the phonetic information, morphology, word and word group information, origin information and semantic information of the words that make up the names of the settlement unit in question were examined and the reason for giving the said name to the settlement unit was emphasized. Within the scope of the study, issues such as the preferred language, words and phrases, whether the names are related to the characteristics of the settlement, and the aspects highlighted in these naming while naming Bitlis province, district and town center settlements were examined. This way, a holistic evaluation of Bitlis place names was provided.
